The Virginia Department of Aviation has announced the winners of the 2024 Virginia Aviation Photo Contest. The winning photography is posted to the DOAV website and will be featured in the Virginia Department of Aviation’s 2025 calendar.
A total of 13 photos were selected for the calendar from nine photographers across the Commonwealth and North Carolina. Each photographer highlighted aircraft around Virginia’s scenic views and airports. There was a total of 156 photos submitted for this year’s contest.
First place in the 2024 contest was awarded to Trevyr Schutz of Shawsville, Va. Schutz is a resident student at Liberty University studying commercial corporate aviation. He holds a private pilot’s certificate and is an enlisted airman in the United States Air Force maintaining the KC135 Stratotanker.
Schutz’ winning photo is a picturesque image of a King Air 350 under the sunset at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA). It was one of two photos from Schutz that were selected to be included in the 2025 calendar. The young aviation enthusiast is well on his way to a bright future in the field.
“My aviation goals include becoming a pilot at one of the major commercial airlines and to help other pilots that come after me achieve their goals in aviation,” Schutz said. “It’s amazing to be chosen and I’m very thankful for the selection. I am incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to work on and fly airplanes.”
Second place in the 2024 contest went to Bo Corbin of Culpeper, Va. Corbin’s photo showcased a UVA Pegasus (EC 145) flying over the Culpeper countryside at sunset. The cover photo for the 2025 calendar was also from Corbin, who captured a stunning image of an AirCare6 (Bell 407) departing CulpeperFest.
Third place in the 2024 contest was awarded to Bruce Holmes of Williamsburg, Va. Holmes’ submission was of his ICON A5 flying over the James River near Waltrip Williamsburg Executive Airport (JGG).

The 2025 Virginia Aviation Photo Contest is now open and accepting submissions. Entry forms and complete contest details can be found on the DOAV website. The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2025.
