Embraer Grants $35,000 Toward Marshall’s Division of Aviation to Support Student Experiences

The Marshall University Foundation has announced a grant of $35,000 from Embraer and the Embraer Foundation through its Educational Partnership Program to support student experiences in the Division of Aviation at Marshall University. “Embarking on a career in aviation starts with opportunity,” said Monica Newman McCluney, head of U.S. corporate social responsibility and the Embraer Foundation. “Since the launch of Marshall University’s AMT program, the Embraer Foundation has contributed over $150,000 — and paired that support with campus visits, mentoring and immersive experiences that help students see themselves in aviation. Through Embraer Signing Day and Embraer Campus Days, we are proud to inspire students across disciplines to envision a future in this dynamic industry.” “Embraer representatives met with Marshall University students at a special dinner during the Women in Aviation International Conference in Grapevine, Texas.” With this grant, students in the Division of Aviation will continue to travel, attend industry conferences and engage in job shadowing experiences with seasoned professionals. The program launched in 2022 to identify new talent through secondary and post-secondary aviation program partnerships with a focus on recruitment, student scholarships and a structured internship program, as well as promote brand awareness in a competitive field. Through the program, Embraer offers a series of scholarships, grants, apprenticeship and internship placements to build and retain a diverse workforce. In addition to this most recent grant, the Embraer Foundation has provided Marshall with a total of $120,000 in grant funding to date. Embraer first partnered with Marshall in 2022 to support the launch of its Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program, developed in collaboration with Mountwest Community and Technical College. The initial $50,000 grant helped equip the program with essential resources, including funding for professional-grade tool kits for student use. Signature Aviation, BETA Technologies, Inc., Republic Airways Holdings Inc., and Brickyard Connection completed three days of high-cadence electric flight demonstrations at Kissimmee Gateway Airport earlier this month following a winter demonstration campaign in Burlington, Vermont, and Plattsburgh, New York, earlier this year. The back-to-back hot- and cold-weather demonstrations prove the readiness of electric commercial aviation to support cargo, logistics, passenger, and medical missions connecting Florida’s major metropolitan areas with the regional airports that serve them. Signature Aviation has taken a leadership position in bringing electric ground support infrastructure to the market worldwide. As part of its Advanced Air Mobility strategy, Signature is partnering with BETA to expand charging capabilities across Florida and beyond. Most recently commissioned at Kissimmee Gateway Airport was a BETA Charge Cube and Thermal Management System, which enables ultra-fast charging, despite hot and humid weather conditions. BETA has charging infrastructure installed at six airports across the state, including Kissimmee Gateway Airport, Duke Field (Eglin Air Force Base Auxiliary) and Bob Sikes Airport in Crestview, Gainesville Regional Airport, Tallahassee International Airport, and Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport. “Together, BETA, Republic Airways, and Signature Aviation are demonstrating how aircraft, infrastructure, and operators can unite in a real-world environment to deliver repeatable missions and a clear path to commercialization for all-electric flight,” said Simon Newitt, head of sales and support at BETA. “BETA has flown more than 140,000 nautical miles in ALIA aircraft across the globe. That operational experience is what positions us to scale deliberately and efficiently in states like Florida, where near-term, short-haul cargo, medical, and passenger demand is strongest.” Republic Airways is long established as a premier regional airline, servicing the majors, with a focus on safety and operational excellence. Since announcing their collaboration at the Paris Air Show last year, BETA and Republic have executed a series of activities, including advanced pilot training, operational integration, and high-cadence performance evaluations. First, BETA administered customer crew training to three Brickyard pilots, complete with coursework, simulator sessions, and check rides, demonstrating the maturity of BETA’s ALIA CX300 Pilot Training program. Next, BETA and Republic conducted a series of 34 high-cadence flights across a four-day period in winter conditions between Burlington, VT, and Plattsburgh, NY. Finally, leveraging the newly-installed ground support equipment at Signature Aviation, Kissimmee Airport, BETA and Brickyard pilots once again pressure-tested BETA’s ALIA CX300 aircraft flying up to nine legs per day, with an average charge session of 105 kWh per flight and $16.80 in energy consumed per leg. “Republic Airways is energized by the promise that Advanced Air Mobility brings to the future of regional air travel, for both passengers and cargo,” said Matt Koscal, president, Republic Airways. “Our collaboration with BETA to test and evaluate the ALIA CTOL aircraft is helping illuminate what’s possible as we explore new ways to expand local air services in Florida and beyond. AOPA Continues Mental Health Initiative with New Interview, Education Material

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) continues to highlight the importance of mental health during its monthlong initiative with the release of a new interview with Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Susan Northrup and a new elective in the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s electronic Flight Instructor Refresher Course (eFIRC). “Many pilots have been wary of seeking treatment for mental health concerns out of fear they would no longer be allowed to fly,” said AOPA Acting Co-President Katie Pribyl. “We’ve seen a high level of engagement with this initiative, and we believe it’s because there are pilots out there who want to know their options, while also wanting the stigma to disappear.” Dr. Northrup, who leads the FAA Office of Aerospace Medicine, said her team continues to explore ways to help make the process smoother and allow pilots access to a wider range of medications, while also highlighting important resources and reducing the amount of time some pilots have to wait for the FAA to review their medical application. “We’ve been trying to do everything we can to make our processes more transparent, more consistent, and quite frankly, getting the knowledge out there so that people know what to expect, and of course we want it to be timely,” said Dr. Northrup. “As a result of that, we’ve also been looking very closely at the policies and procedures that we have internally to be sure that we are keeping up with current medicine and medical practice.” Dr. Northrup also discussed an upcoming amnesty program to encourage pilots to self-report past diagnoses and treatment but noted it may require pilots to self-ground while their case is evaluated, though it would not result in consequences for past falsification. “Things are moving in the right direction but, like anything involving pilots and safety, it takes time,” said AOPA Acting Co-President Jill Baker. “Our goal this month is for pilots to understand the resources that are available today, and that AOPA has your back. All AOPA members have the benefit of our Pilot Information Center, and every year, our medical certification team helps thousands of pilots understand the process and then, if they require a special issuance, can help them through that process.” ASI’s eFIRC has also released a new elective as part of this month’s initiative, making it the only flight instructor refresher course that offers mental health content. Thousands of instructors complete a FIRC every two years to stay current as a CFI. “I take AOPA’s eFIRC every two years, and this elective is a great addition,” said Pribyl. “It focuses on what CFIs can do to support themselves, how they can help their students, and updates on significant FAA mental health policy changes in the last five years.” Remaining programming includes a dedicated webinar with Reini Thijssen on pilot mental health today. The next day, the AOPA Air Safety Institute will release a second installment of its Expert Insights video series focused on mental health. “Mind of a Pilot” with neurologist Dr. Billy Hoffman covers unique perspectives on the effects of stress, medications, alcohol, and aging on aeronautical decision making.

Founded in 2000 as a small flying school with barely 30 members, FLY4FUN has experienced remarkable growth and success. Today, the vibrant aeroclub boasts approximately 110 members—including over 60 active renters—and is guided by a dedicated team of four expert instructors. The school made the strategic decision to switch to Tecnam in 2010. Since then, they have accumulated an impressive 15,000 to 18,000 flying hours exclusively on Tecnam aircraft.
