North Dakota Aeronautics Commission Releases July Airline Boarding Update

The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission (NDAC) has released its July 2026 airline passenger statistics for the state’s eight commercial service airports. North Dakota’s commercial service airports recorded 117,381 passenger boardings, a decrease of 4% from the 122,238 boardings recorded in July 2025. Despite the year-over-year decline, this represented the second-highest July passenger total on record, trailing only the historic high set last year. The decline in passenger boardings closely corresponded with a reduction in available airline capacity. Airlines provided 136,667 departure seats during the month, approximately 3.6% fewer than in July 2025, while the statewide average aircraft load factor remained strong at 86%. The continued high utilization of available seats indicates that passenger demand remained resilient despite the reduction in capacity. Through the first seven months of 2026, North Dakota’s commercial service airports have recorded 760,204 passenger boardings, approximately 2% below the record-setting pace established during the same period in 2025. Air Service Updates: Bismarck: Allegiant has extended its flight schedule through May 2027, including the return of seasonal nonstop service between Bismarck Airport (BIS) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). The service is scheduled to operate from February 13 through April 3, 2027. Grand Forks: Allegiant has announced the return of seasonal nonstop service between Grand Forks International Airport (GFK) and Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) for the 2027 spring travel season. The service is scheduled to operate from February 10 through April 17, 2027. Individual Airport July Passenger Records: Fargo Hector International Airport established a new July passenger record with 56,359 boardings, surpassing its previous July record of 54,008 set in 2025. Jamestown Regional Airport established a new July passenger record with 1,572 boardings, surpassing its previous July record of 1,297 set in 2017. Devils Lake Regional Airport established a new July passenger record with 1,521 boardings, surpassing its previous July record of 1,275 set in 2025. Asheville Regional Airport’s Lew Bleiweis Presented with AAAE Distinguished Service Award

Lew S. Bleiweis, A.A.E., president and CEO of the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority (GARAA), was presented recently with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest levels of recognition. AAAE Chair Marshall Stevens, A.A.E. presented Asheville Regional Airport President & CEO Lew Bleiweis, A.A.E. with the American Association of Airport Executives Distinguished Service Award during the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority Board meeting on August 17, 2026. The award is presented to airport executives in honor of an exemplary career and contributions to the airport industry. Over the course of a nearly 40-year career in aviation, Bleiweis has built a career defined by thoughtful leadership, steady judgment and a clear vision for the future of airports. “Over the course of a nearly four-decade career in aviation, Lew has established himself as a respected airport executive, industry leader and dedicated advocate for the airport profession,” said AAAE Chair and Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Vice President, Operations, and Chief Operating Officer Marshall Stevens, A.A.E. “His career reflects a sustained commitment to strengthening airports, advancing the profession and serving the communities that depend on them. This award reflects the respect and admiration of his colleagues across the country for the leadership and service he has demonstrated throughout his career.” Bleiweis joined the Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority in 2008 as Deputy Airport Director and was promoted to lead the organization the following year. Under his leadership, AVL has experienced significant growth, evolving from a non-hub airport to a thriving small hub serving millions of travelers each year. During his tenure, the airport has also strengthened its financial position while undertaking more than $750 million in capital expansion projects designed to prepare AVL to serve the region well into the future. His leadership and commitment to Western North Carolina were especially evident following Hurricane Helene. While the storm devastated communities and infrastructure throughout the region, AVL remained operational and became a critical gateway for coordinated federal, state and local disaster relief efforts. Bleiweis and the AVL team worked around the clock to maintain airport operations while supporting the unprecedented response and recovery effort. “This recognition is truly a reflection of the people I have had the privilege to work alongside throughout my career,” said Bleiweis. “I am especially proud of the team at Asheville Regional Airport and what we have accomplished together for Western North Carolina. He has served on the AAAE Board of Directors, contributed to AAAE committees, participated in accreditation panels and served as president of the Southeast Chapter of AAAE in 2007. He also served as Chair of Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) in 2020 and 2021 and has held leadership positions with the ACI-NA U.S. Policy Council, ACI World Governing Board and the National Aviation Hall of Fame Board of Nominations. His industry leadership has previously earned national and regional recognition, including being named the AAAE Southeast Chapter Airport Professional of the Year in 2017 and Airport Experience News Airport Director of the Year in the Small Airports category in 2019. Bleiweis’ service extends beyond the aviation industry. Locally, he has served with the Buncombe County Economic Development Coalition and Western North Carolina Pilots Association, participates in the local CEO Forum through The Keystone Group and has volunteered with organizations including MANNA FoodBank, United Way and Habitat for Humanity. This AAAE Distinguished Service Award recognizes a career dedicated not only to strengthening the airport profession and advancing Asheville Regional Airport, but also the communities the airport serves.

SyberJet Aircraft Breaks Light Jet Transcontinental East-to-West Speed Record

SyberJet Aircraft announced last week that its SJ30-2 has set an unofficial East-to-West transcontinental speed record in the C-1.f aircraft class, flying nonstop from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego, California in approximately 4 hours and 7 minutes at an average speed of 505.3 mph. Official certification from the National Aeronautic Association and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale is expected to take approximately 90 days. “The results are fantastic,” said Trevor Milton, CEO of SyberJet Aircraft. “I want to thank Gordy, the mechanics, the employees and all the supporters that watched the journey. The National Aeronautic Association announced the recipients of the 2026 Public Benefit Flying Awards today. The Southern Hemisphere’s First Hydrogen-Electric Aircraft Taxi, and a Proud Farewell

Photo: Steven Holden A small Australian company has achieved something no one in the Southern Hemisphere has done before: the Stralis Aircraft team taxied a hydrogen-electric aircraft at an international airport. The aircraft’s name is Bonnie, a Beechcraft Bonanza A36 retrofitted with Stralis Aircraft’s proprietary hydrogen-electric propulsion system. The moment was four years in the making. It’s also, for now, where the Stralis story ends. Stralis Aircraft will close following this milestone. The company proved the technology works. However, it could not close the gap between proof and commercial readiness quickly enough to sustain the business. The taxi On 29 July 2026, Stralis Chief Engineer and test pilot Steve Holden taxied Bonnie at Brisbane International Airport. The taxi was powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells generating electricity through an electric motor. No combustion. No emissions. Only water vapor as a byproduct. It was the first hydrogen-electric aircraft taxi in the Southern Hemisphere conducted at an international airport. For the Stralis team, it was the culmination of immense hard work and belief that there is a more sustainable way to travel. “Reaching this milestone is a proud moment for all of us,” said Bob Criner, Co-founder and CEO, Stralis Aircraft. “It reflects the dedication of our hardworking team and the trust our investors, partners and supporters placed in us over the last few years. I am proud of what we built — the technology, the company, the community. I want to thank everyone who has been part of the journey.” “Brisbane Airport is proud to have hosted this groundbreaking Australian trial and congratulates the Stralis team,” said Raechel Paris, EGM Strategy, Planning & Sustainability, Brisbane Airport. “The project provided valuable insights into how hydrogen powered aircraft could operate within an airport environment and will help inform the future development of lower-emissions aviation technologies, supporting Brisbane Airport’s ongoing exploration of sustainable aviation solutions.” Why Stralis is closing The market for hydrogen-electric aviation is still forming, and Stralis reached the limits of how long it could wait. The technology proved itself. However, bringing a certified commercial aircraft to market is a long and capital-intensive journey. For most airlines today, the commercial case for hydrogen does not yet outweigh the additional costs, operational changes, and infrastructure investment it requires. Without the industry pull, raising the capital to see it through proved beyond Stralis’s reach. Hydrogen will eventually deliver a meaningful advantage for aviation. It offers greater range, increased payload, and lower operating costs in the right applications. But the wider ecosystem — liquid hydrogen supply, component maturity, regulatory pathways, and the refueling infrastructure — has not yet matured to support the transition. Unfortunately, the advantage is not currently large enough to justify the disruption required to adopt it. Stralis was also experimenting with hydrogen-propulsion technology for drones. The early tests were promising, and it offered a near-term solution with more immediate market demand. However, the company’s line remains firm, the team will wrap up the Stralis story this month. The decision to close was made with clarity, a strong sense of pride, and without regret. “There are many factors that played into this outcome, including things we could have done differently,” said Stuart Johnstone, Co-founder and CTO, Stralis Aircraft. “We continue to believe that hydrogen has a compelling long-term role in aviation. We are proud of the team, the technology, and every person who backed us. Photo Credit: Toru Yajima CubCrafters recently announced the successful completion of an extraordinary international journey by Australian pilot and aircraft owner David Green, who flew his new Carbon Cub UL from the CubCrafters factory in Yakima, Washington, to his home in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia. Rather than disassembling his new aircraft and shipping it home, Green chose a considerably more adventurous delivery method: flying it there himself. Green’s Carbon Cub UL—nicknamed “Dusty”—departed Yakima on July 22 and began an epic 30-day journey across continents and oceans. One of his first stops was EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin, where Dusty joined the world’s largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts before continuing east toward the Atlantic. The flight included long overwater legs, rapidly changing weather, international border crossings, fuel planning, permits, customs, and the logistical challenges of keeping both pilot and aircraft moving across multiple countries. By the time Green arrived in Port Macquarie on August 20, he had logged approximately 16,800 nautical miles and nearly 144 hours of flight time. The journey is believed to represent an unofficial world record for a flight of this type by a Cub-style backcountry aircraft and adds another remarkable achievement to the growing list of accomplishments for the Carbon Cub UL. “Flying Dusty home from Yakima to Australia has been a heck of an adventure,” Green said after arriving in Port Macquarie. “Nearly 17,000 nautical miles across oceans, continents, and some incredibly remote parts of the world, and the Carbon Cub just kept going. The airplane performed beautifully, and I trusted it every step of the way.” A Backcountry Aircraft That Goes the Distance For CubCrafters, that trust is one of the most important aspects of Green’s accomplishment. While very few Carbon Cub owners will ever undertake a journey as ambitious as his, the qualities that make such a flight possible are the same ones that matter every day in backcountry aviation: reliability, durability, efficiency, and confidence in the aircraft. “We focus on reliability and safety, and as a result, this is the kind of adventure the Carbon Cub is capable of,” said Brad Damm, Vice President of CubCrafters. “David could have put the airplane in a container and shipped it to Australia. Instead, he pointed the nose toward home and flew it more than halfway around the world.” Backcountry flying routinely takes pilots far from large airports, maintenance facilities, and other support. Whether crossing an ocean or heading into a remote mountain strip, pilots need an aircraft they can trust. “Very few people are ever going to take their backcountry airplane on an adventure like David’s,” Damm continued. “But whether you’re crossing an ocean or heading into a remote strip, you need to trust your airplane to go the distance. That’s what we build at CubCrafters—aircraft you can have confidence in when the pavement, the airports, and the roads are far behind you.” The Carbon Cub UL combines CubCrafters’ proven backcountry airframe with modern lightweight construction and the turbocharged, electronically controlled Rotax 916 iS, providing strong high-altitude performance, excellent fuel efficiency, and system redundancy for operations far from conventional support. From 37,609 Feet to Australia Green’s journey is the latest in a series of extraordinary flights demonstrating the breadth of the Carbon Cub UL’s capabilities. On October 28, 2025, a Carbon Cub UL piloted by Jon Kotwicki climbed to a verified altitude of 37,609 feet over the California coast, establishing an unofficial world altitude record for Cub-type aircraft. The flight surpassed the previous 30,203-foot benchmark established by pioneering aviator Caro Bayley in a Piper PA-18 Super Cub in 1951. → Read more about the historic high-altitude flight In July 2026, another Carbon Cub UL, N21UL, demonstrated a very different kind of capability, completing the first transatlantic flight by a Carbon Cub UL. The aircraft traveled approximately 6,900 nautical miles from Idaho to Poland and accumulated 94.5 flight hours while crossing the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Europe. → Read more about the historic transatlantic flight Now Green and Dusty have taken the Carbon Cub UL even farther, flying approximately 16,800 nautical miles from Washington State to Australia. “Last year we took a Carbon Cub UL above 37,000 feet. This summer another one crossed the North Atlantic to Poland. Now David has flown one from our factory in Yakima all the way home to Australia,” Damm said. “Yet this is still an airplane that can land on a short grass strip or a gravel bar. That combination of performance, efficiency, reliability, and versatility is what makes the Carbon Cub UL such a remarkable aircraft.” The Carbon Cub UL is first and foremost a backcountry aircraft, designed for exceptional short takeoff and landing performance, low-speed handling, useful load, efficiency, and access to places conventional aircraft cannot easily reach. Green’s journey demonstrates just how far those capabilities can extend. “Records are fun, but ultimately these flights aren’t really about records,” Damm said. “They demonstrate what the airplane is capable of. Most owners aren’t going to fly at 37,000 feet or halfway around the world. But when they point their airplane toward somewhere remote, they can know they’re flying an aircraft engineered and built to go the distance.”
