2018 ACC Young Professionals Innovation Competition Winner Announced

The Airport Consultants Council (ACC) announced the winner of the 2018 ACC Young Professionals Innovation Competition, ‘Solar Powered & Intelligent Pavement’. The proposal provides a solution for airports to use Solar Roadways to generate clean, renewable energy on roadways and any other surface that can be walked or driven on. In addition to solar energy, the solution embeds LED lights to replace paint in lieu of road lines and signage, has an integrated heating component to prevent snow/ice accumulation, and integrates a stormwater capture system. The winning team includes Thierry Sarr, CM, Berg & Associates/Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA); Gareth Hanley, AICP, CM, RS&H; Ken Coutain, Jr., Broward County Florida; and Marie Guittard, DY Consultants.

The first- and second-place teams presented their submissions at the 2019 ACC/AAAE Airport Planning, Design & Construction Symposium on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, to a panel of judges, who then conferred and announced the official winner at the Awards Luncheon on Thursday, February 21, 2019. The panel of judges was made up of Jane Ahrens, Burns & McDonnell; David Kipp, Burns Engineering; and David Peshkin, Applied Pavement Technology.

Supported in part by the ACC Members Foundation, the competition is part of a larger program offered by the ACC Young Professionals Forum as a means to engage the young professionals in ACC member firms and enhance their professional careers. Targeted for industry professionals that are aged 35 or under, the Young Professionals Forum provides networking, mentoring, education, and career growth opportunities.

ACC would like to thank all who submitted projects and participated in the competition, including team members from the following firms and airports:
