Avianca Cargo and disaster response nonprofit Airlink have partnered to fly critical humanitarian aid to help combat a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Mexico City. Through a recently signed partnership, Avianca Cargo and Airlink transported 480,000 surgical face masks from Miami to Mexico City, contributing to the local government’s efforts to protect the population against COVID-19.
According to the latest epidemiological update, Mexico City accounts for more than 25% of all the cumulative COVID-19 cases in the country. The face masks, donated by Airlink’s partner ADRA International, will provide critical assistance to the community as the country is ramping up its vaccination campaign to curb the spread of the epidemic.
“Avianca Cargo is committed to supporting humanitarian relief operations by transporting life-saving cargo to curb the impact of COVID-19” said Kurt Schosinsky, Avianca Cargo Managing Director.
“Our partnership with Avianca Cargo is a central element in our efforts to support humanitarian responses in Latin America,” said Airlink President and CEO, Steven J. Smith. “It is helping us and our humanitarian aid and disaster response partners make a difference to the lives of local communities”.
Airlink supports over 130 aid organizations by harnessing the power of the aviation industry to provide free and subsidized airlift to humanitarian response nonprofits responding to natural and man-made disasters. Through Airlink, more than 5.3 million people were provided assistance in 2020, and they transported over 8.5 million items of PPE.
