Scott Coffman, Leesburg, Virginia Executive Airport Director, was presented with a fully restored taxiway light by a group of airport tenants at last week’s meeting of the Leesburg Town Council meeting.
A group of airport tenants noted to the Airport Commission that Coffman does an outstanding job with very little staff. The recent initiative to get a 2nd FBO, the new taxiway markings and the lighting upgrade were noticed by tenants. The lighting project replaced 40-year-old incandescent lights with brighter LEDs which reduced the airside electric bill by over 70%.
As the lighting upgrade project neared completion, folks took it upon themselves to take one of the old taxiway lights, strip it, repaint it, wire it, and mount it on a really nice wooden base for presentation to Coffman with his name on it.
Owned and operated by the Town of Leesburg, the Leesburg Executive Airport (JYO) is the second busiest General Aviation (GA) airport in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located 35 miles from Washington DC, Leesburg Executive Airport is a designated reliever airport for Washington-Dulles International Airport. Leesburg Executive Airport has a 5,500-foot grooved asphalt runway with a 70,000-pound dual-wheel capacity. A new Instrument Landing System was commissioned in March 2011, supplementing the existing GPS and WAAS approaches. Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPIs) and an upgrade of the Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) was completed in 2012.
