New Control Tower Dedicated at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new air traffic control tower at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio was held on March 22nd. The dedication was attended by city and state officials. The new tower’s distinctive design pays homage to over 100 years of aviation history at the airport and highlights San Antonio’s aviation legacy.

“Friday’s ribbon cutting was very nice,” said Kari Campbell, Director of Grant Management for the TxDOT Aviation Division. “The city had a beautiful day to officially dedicate the tower.”  Short speeches were provided by Rebecca Viagran, City Council Member from District 3, City Manager, Erik Walsh, and Greg Miller from TxDOT.

The tower’s design is entitled “Wings over Stinson” and has integrated bi-plane wings reminiscent of the early days at Stinson along the sides of the structure. At night the wings will be illuminated ensuring the tower’s iconic look both during the day and at night. Stinson Municipal Airport is the second oldest continuously operated airport in the United States.

Refreshments were available and a mariachi band serenaded the crowd. Attendees were also able to tour the tower.

Kim Stevens is the publisher of State Aviation Journal, which he founded in 2009. A longtime commercial-rated pilot, he was introduced to state aviation in 1992 as Director of the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, later serving as Deputy Division Director for the Arizona Department of Transportation's Aeronautics Division. From 2013 to 2018, he was Director of Communications and Operations for the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) in Washington, D.C. Relocating to North Carolina, Kim worked for the Raleigh-Durham International Airport for two years and now concentrates solely on the Journal. Prior to his aviation career, Kim spent a decade in the newspaper and magazine business.
