C&S Companies has announced that the firm received a Platinum Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, New York Chapter for the T.F. Green Airport Runway 5 extension. C&S was the prime engineer and construction manager for the extension of Runway 5 and its parallel taxiway to 8,700 feet, including design, public outreach, funding consultation, and construction management. The extension allows the airport to offer longer-haul flights to the West Coast and Europe. This was the first airfield project in the country to receive a Gold Envision Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The construction had to be phased to maintain runway operations during construction. An engineered material arresting system (EMAS) was constructed for the Runway 5 safety area. Profile improvements were made to 1,600 feet of existing Runway 5-23 to meet FAA standards, using pavement mill and overlay, excavation and embankment of nearly 200,000 cubic yards, construction of new stormwater drainage facilities, including more than 13,000 feet of pipe with no additional off-site discharge, construction of new airfield lighting, runway guard lights, signage, and markings. Much of the runway and taxiway lighting required construction within the existing or proposed pavement section. A new FAA-owned approach lighting system (ALSF-2) was installed and existing FAA-owned instrument landing system (ILS) components were relocated. FAA provided the design for their systems and infrastructure. C&S coordinated on behalf of the owner, integrated the items with design documents, managed construction, and finally the installation of a new fiberglass blast fence to protect Main Avenue. The project was completed on time and under budget.
