The C&S Companies were presented with a 2017 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies Ohio at their annual Engineering Excellence Awards luncheon held on March 9. C&S was recognized for the firm’s work on the Youngstown Warren Regional Airport mid-field taxiways design project, for which the firm was the consulting engineer.
Youngstown Warren Regional Airport is a growing commercial facility serving Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. The airport’s taxiway configuration at the intersection of two runways and the terminal ramp presented airfield safety risks and did need meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards. C&S mitigated the problem of runway incursions by significantly revising the taxiway configuration and improving signage and lighting. The improvements have increased pilot situational awareness and now comply with FAA design standards. This multi-faceted project involved removing large areas of pavement, construction of a new taxiway, improvements to an existing taxiway, a ramp expansion, lighting installation, and electrical and utility improvements. The project was broken into four phases that balanced the need to maintain operations with a reasonable construction timeframe. The project was completed under budget in 10 weeks (well ahead of schedule).
The Engineering Excellence Awards Competition is an annual program that brings well-deserved public recognition to Ohio’s engineering industry by spotlighting engineering projects that demonstrate a high degree of uniqueness, ingenuity and value.
