Asheville Regional to Bring Back Runway 5K

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, Asheville Regional Airport is bringing back the popular Runway 5K on Saturday, October 9 at 2pm. The community is invited to sign up for this fun event that will be held on the airfield. Registration is now open.

“AVL has been a huge part of the fabric of Western North Carolina for 60 years, and we want to share a fun and unique day with our community,” said Lew Bleiweis, Executive Director. “It’s an amazing experience to spend time on the airfield, watching airplanes take off and land just 150 feet away. Welcoming our community to experience aviation so closely is one way we can celebrate our region’s airport together.”

The Runway 5K will be held on the west side of the airfield, and festivities will begin at noon, to include live music (setting a retro, 60s vibe), food trucks, special merchandise sales and more. All proceeds from the event will benefit two local aviation scholarship funds: The A-B Tech Aviation Fund, and the WNC Pilots Association Foundation Scholarship Fund.

“Supporting aviation education is important to us, and western North Carolina is fortunate to have a local aviation management program at A-B Tech, as well as a flight school. Both scholarship funds will assist local students who are interested in pursuing careers in this exciting industry,” said Bleiweis.

The event is made possible in part by generous sponsors: First Class sponsors – AVCON and Gresham Smith; and Business Class sponsors – CHA, McGriff Insurance Services, Parrish & Partners, Vannoy Construction.

Registration is limited to 1,000 participants, and those who register by September 16 are guaranteed a race t-shirt. To learn more and to register for this event, visit flyavl.com/Runway5k.
