MBS International Airport, located in Freeland, Michigan has received the 2019 Airport of the Year from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) – Office of Aeronautics in the air carrier airport category. The award was presented by Mark Noel, Manager of the Planning and Development section at MDOT – Office of Aeronautics, on February 20 at the 2020 Michigan Airport Conference Awards Luncheon held in Lansing, Michigan. The Airport of the Year Award is determined by a consensus of the MDOT – Office of Aeronautics project managers.
The award was presented for the overall operation of the airport and the successful completion of a major rehabilitation of the main runway 5/23 last summer. The runway project included a new top layer of asphalt, new runway lights, and new electrical cable. The project cost was approximately $8.1 million and was completed ahead of schedule.
This honor was accepted by Jeff Nagel, Airport Manager, Airport Commission Vice Chairman John Milne, several members of the airport staff, and the consultant RS&H.
