The Springfield Airport Authority completed more than $7 million in capital improvements to taxiways, roadways, hangars, ramps, building facilities and equipment during the 2014 calendar year. These improvements were initiated or completed during the year greatly improving areas involving aircraft operations, passenger safety, airport security, aircraft storage, energy conservation and customer service.
Specifically, the capital improvement projects completed include safety and standards modifications to
Taxiway Bravo and airfield perimeter roadways, the rehabilitation of general aviation ramps, the
acquisition of numerous pieces of snow removal and airfield maintenance equipment, the rehabilitation of a large aircraft storage hangar, comprehensive airport security and life safety systems upgrades, various parking lot improvements and building HVAC upgrades.
“These are necessary infrastructure and equipment improvements to keep our community’s airport safe, modern and competitive in a highly regulated industry,” says Airport Authority Board Chair Frank Vala. “These investments demonstrate our commitment to keeping pace with demand and exceeding regulatory requirements regarding the operation of the airport. Additionally, we continue to plan for projects that provide multiple benefits for the facility.
For example, the taxiway and roadway reconfiguration and improvements will facilitate safer aircraft movements on the airfield and were completed at a time when the existing pavements were due for maintenance and upgrading. The hangar rehabilitation project preserved major structural components that were some fifty years old, which saved the Authority tens of thousands of dollars and transformed the hangar into an attractive and modern aircraft storage facility which will provide opportunities to accommodate more business aircraft and grow the general aviation service sector at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport.”
