Air Race Classic Takes Off from Lake Havasu City

Women pilots from around the country took off from Lake Havasu City, Arizona on Tuesday, for the first leg of the 36th Annual Air Race Classic 2012. With more than fifty teams registered the pilots began departing at 8 a.m. bound for their first stop in Gallup, New Mexico. The teams have eight airports that they must either land at or fly over before reaching their final destination in Batavia in southern Ohio, a course distance of 2,300 miles. Kim Stevens

Kim Stevens is the publisher of State Aviation Journal, which he founded in 2009. A longtime commercial-rated pilot, he was introduced to state aviation in 1992 as Director of the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, later serving as Deputy Division Director for the Arizona Department of Transportation's Aeronautics Division. From 2013 to 2018, he was Director of Communications and Operations for the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) in Washington, D.C.
