Four New Hangars Coming to Tampa Executive Airport

Tampa Executive Airport (VDF) is experiencing a major growth spurt, adding four hangar facilities that are all scheduled to be available later this year. These hangar projects by various private developers mark one of the largest General Aviation infrastructure expansions to date for Hillsborough County Aviation Authority facilities at VDF. The four hangars will add about 42,000 total square feet of space to VDF and are the result of more than $6.4 million in private investment. The first hangar completed was a nearly 12,000-square-foot project started last summer by VDF fixed-base operator Skyport and was finished in March. An additional 20 vehicle parking spaces were included in the scope of the construction. The second hangar project that started in June 2025 also will add another approximate 12,000 square feet of hangar space and is more than 50 percent completed. It is anticipated to be completed by end of summer. The third hangar project will be an approximately 12,000-square-foot hangar split into two hangers that are about 6,000 square feet apiece. This project is in early construction phase and should be completed by year-end. The fourth hangar will be approximately 6,000 square feet and is currently in final permitting. The project should also be completed by the end of 2026. The new hangars will add significant capacity and strengthen economic activity to position VDF for long-term growth. Airport Directors: Stop Telling Aviation Stories

By Eric Blinderman Something recently said to an airport director caused a cocked head and a puzzled look. “Your story is not an aviation one,” he was told. For someone who lives and breathes airport operations and making sure it fits the needs of the pilot community, it was an understandable reaction. That’s his world. It’s in his title and job description. Aviation, what he does, 24/7. This was not meant to discount his daily responsibilities to pilots, aircraft owners and tenants. That’s the community he serves every day. That’s the mission inside the fence. Keep revenue flowing. Keep operations robust. Keep things safe. We need all that. History shows local GA airports aren’t threatened when they lose revenue. They’re threatened when they lose the community. Long-term survival is what happens outside the fence. In a way, permission to succeed. That’s a term we often throw around a lot in aviation: “outside the fence.” The other folks. The aviation muggles. Non-pilots. People you don’t usually see at the airport. But just because they’re out of sight, we can’t keep them out of mind. Outside the fence is where value applies most. It’s not hyperbole that an airport’s long-term survival depends on the story being told ‘out there,’ and the one embraced by the community. As we said in the consumer goods world, “when they buy into you, they’ll buy from you.” If the story’s not about aviation, then what? It’s what it does for me. What it means to me? How my life benefits from it. It’s not the planes, it’s the people. How aviation and the local airport provides value. And that’s where a disconnect often rests. Live outside the fence and there’s a good chance you have no idea what goes on in the big tract of land. “Boys with their toys,” we’ve heard. A waste of space. Great spot for housing or a shopping center. Maybe a park or even a data center (the horror). If your airport’s story is being told for you, I can almost guarantee it’s not a very flattering one. First, remember that everyone has a story. People have stories. Companies, brands, non-profits, associations have one. Local airports especially have one, whether you‘ve intentionally built one or not, whether you like it or not. It’s simply what you mean to the community, the expectations placed upon you, and the value you offer. What’s up for grabs is who’s telling it. Who owns it? What are they saying? And does the airport story naturally weave into the community one? Does the airport story enhance the story that each resident carries with them? Take O’Hare, or Hartsfield, or Dulles. When people drive by, they know the story of that airport: that’s how I get across the country to a meeting, that how my family gets to Disney. That airport has a very defined value that is not often questioned. It’s part of the community and residents’ everyday life. For the most part, the larger commercial airport owns its own story. On the other hand, when someone (a citizen, business leader or elected official) drives by one of our more than 5,500 public-use GA airport, the story gets murkier. Unless you fly or have business at or with the airport, its value is not usually front-and-center. And that vacuum is often filled by mistruths and misperceptions. That’s when the story gets away from us. A negative that’s unfolding in far too many locales across the U.S. We all know of them. What people don’t understand, they don’t appreciate, value or support. That’s why education is among the single most important tasks an airport director has on his or her shoulders. Ensuring the community knows the value story of the airport; what it means to the community. What it means to the individual and the greater good. It’s not that people necessarily disapprove of the local airport (although we know many do), most just have no idea what goes on there. Do they know it: Provides hundreds of jobs and millions in direct revenue, or a boatload in taxes? Serves as the local staging area for search and rescue, disaster relief, law enforcement, agricultural support? Helps fill our nation’s pilot shortage through flight training? Often determines if a company sets up shop, or decides to do business in the city or town? All of this may be intuitive for us. Because we’re so deep in the weeds, we often assume everyone knows our airport’s value story. Just canvas the community and you may find a very different story – literally. Again, “telling stories” may not be in your job description. And it may not be a pressing issue given the never-ending to-do list on your desk. But we need to realize that in GA, connecting with the community isn’t a soft marketing task or the PR stuff that “I’ll get to when the field is mowed or the taxiway light is replaced, or when I settle that festering hangar issue.” I’m too busy to tell a story. Or be worried about it. Please, worry about it. And do something about it. Local airports across the country are in the crosshairs of community members for all of the – misguided – reasons we’ve discussed. And it almost always traces back to a fundamental lack of understanding of what the airport provides to residents, the benefits that only GA airports can offer, especially in times of need or peril. The untold, or misunderstood value story. Taking care of the field is certainly important stuff. Without it, we don’t have a functioning airport. But there may be no more important issue than your story, developing it, telling it, and protecting it. The fact that your airport’s long-term survival may depend on it is not an overstatement. AOPA Highlights Mental Health in May, Delivers Resources for Pilots

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has launched a monthlong initiative to highlight pilot mental health, bringing together educational content, expert guidance, and advocacy updates throughout May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. The initiative, sponsored by Jeppesen ForeFlight, is designed to address common concerns among pilots, including the fear of losing their medical certificate, the stigma surrounding mental health in aviation, and a lack of clear, actionable information for pilots. “Mental health remains one of the biggest challenges facing pilots and the aviation industry today,” said AOPA Acting Co-President Katie Pribyl. “AOPA has been working on this issue for years. Our advocacy efforts with Congress and the FAA have led to many of the improvements we’ve seen so far, but we still have a long way to go. During this month, we want to highlight what resources are available and that getting help doesn’t always have to mean giving up flying.” “Mental health does not discriminate—pilot or nonpilot, career airline captain or student pilot—it can affect any of us,” said AOPA Acting Co-President Jill Baker. “The most important thing we want pilots to take away from this month is that they are not alone, and that AOPA stands ready to help our members through the medical certification process. Our Medical Certification Specialists serve tens of thousands of members every year.” Since May 1, AOPA has released several new resources and articles, including: An interview with Xyla Foxlin, a GA pilot who successfully fought to get her medical certificate back. The first of two Expert Insights video series, focused on mental performance. An article profiling a day in the life of an aviation psychiatrist. Throughout May, AOPA will also: Interview Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Susan Northrup about ongoing efforts to streamline medical certification and reduce the stigma around mental health. Dedicate its monthly “What’s Up?” webinar on May 21 to mental health by interviewing Reini Thijssen, a counselor who specializes in supporting pilots. Share additional social media content highlighting the importance of addressing mental health. Expand mental health educational opportunities for CFIs to give them tools to support their students. All resources released throughout May are being compiled in AOPA’s Mental Health Resource Center.

At FL Technics, Adriana Wheeler, SVP of Business Development, and Modestas Valiusevicius, SVP of Strategic Asset Purchasing, focus on sourcing, evaluating, and returning assets to service, as well as generating material through teardowns, helping operators reduce downtime and bypass lengthy repair cycles. Within FL Technics, Engines, Airframes & Materials Services (EAMS) functions as a one-stop shop that handles all aspects of spare parts trading, repairs, and engine management. The team focuses on supplying materials at a lower cost and shorter lead times compared to new OEM parts. This is achieved through a structured process: acquiring airframes and engines, disassembling them, recertifying the components, and returning them to the market as serviceable material, helping airlines lower overall aircraft ownership costs. In parallel, inventory is continuously replenished through the sourcing of additional parts and material packages, ensuring consistent availability. According to SNS Insider, the global used serviceable material market is projected to reach $10.86 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 4.51%. This growth is driven by increasing aircraft retirements and the adoption of USM as part of airlines’ cost-reduction and sustainability strategies. What is asset trading? The definition of an “asset” varies across the industry. At FL Technics, the term is used broadly and includes airframes, engines (and major engine modules), landing gear, and auxiliary power units (APUs). Once an airframe is acquired and disassembled, these high-value assemblies become individual assets in their own right. Assets deemed unserviceable can hold significant value. When FL Technics purchases unserviceable engines, for example, it develops tailored solutions to repair and return them to service at lower cost, significantly extending their lifecycle. “We receive a constant flow of opportunities, which are then assessed by our evaluation team. They review each case in detail to determine the asset’s condition, potential value, and the work required to return it to service. This also includes assessing any additional equipment that may need repair or replacement,” notes Mr. Valiusevicius. The asset lifecycle: acquisition to market EAMS projects are inherently complex and long-term in nature. Success depends not only on technical expertise but also on strong relationships across the industry. At FL Technics, this involves close collaboration with lessors, airlines, and engine and asset management companies, supported by ongoing engagement through trade shows and direct client interaction. “We have developed relationships with all major leasing companies, airlines, and asset management companies and regularly receive RFPs (Requests for Proposal) for whole aircraft, engine, or airframe acquisitions. We conduct a detailed assessment of each opportunity, evaluating the asset’s current condition, required work scope, and investment needed before submitting a bid,” explains Ms. Wheeler. Once an asset is awarded, the process transitions into execution. FL Technics’ in-house legal team supports transaction efficiency, while technical teams conduct comprehensive reviews of records, certifications, and traceability. All repair work is performed at FAA-and-EASA certified shops, with strict requirements for serviceability, certification, and full traceability of all components. “One of the key problems that this model solves is time. Sending an engine for repair can be both lengthy and costly. For mid-life engines, we can often provide a serviceable solution that meets requirements at reduced cost and within a shorter timeframe,” says Ms. Wheeler. This value proposition is becoming increasingly relevant. According to the latest forecast by Aviation Week, engine spending is projected to account for 53% of total commercial aftermarket revenue in 2026 (up from 46% just two years prior), as rising parts costs and supply chain pressure push maintenance expenditure steadily higher. EAMS risk management Material availability can be unpredictable. In some cases, it takes longer to find the right module with the required configuration and remaining cycles, without over-building. To manage these challenges, FL Technics relies on clear internal standards, experienced personnel and vertically integrated capabilities, including ownership of its own engine shop, FL Technics Engine Services. This integration enables better cost control, reduced lead times, and greater operational flexibility. “We can secure maintenance slots in advance for assets arriving within weeks. This would be much harder if we had to rely on third-party service providers. There would simply be too many uncertainties. This gives us precious time and flexibility when we are searching materials,” says Mr. Valiusevicius.

Built with a cutting-edge “clean-sheet” design, the A220-300 aircraft is developed and designed by Canadian workers from scratch.
