Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick was on hand during a June 27th celebration of the commencement of the second phase of the Nantucket Memorial Airport’s carbon neutral airport program, which will implement over 25 energy conservation measures to achieve carbon neutrality.
During the Phase I process, MassDOT Aeronautics Division and Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe) solicited proposals from airports within the Commonwealth to become the Program’s pilot airport to create the first ever airport with “carbon neutral” ground operations in the United States. Phase I began in October 2012 and was completed in April 2014.
With the help of Honeywell Building Solutions, Phase II will implement over 25 Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) to achieve carbon neutrality and include elements such as a 1.1 MW solar farm and a 400kW parking lot solar array, as well as a suite of new building equipment including both indoor and outdoor LED lighting.
The Carbon Neutral Airport Program will assist Nantucket Memorial Airport and in the future, a number of airports within the Commonwealth, in meeting GreenDOT Policy goals to respond to various legislative acts and programs to “green” the Commonwealth’s transportation system.
