Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has appointed Beatrice Airport Manager Diana Smith as the new commissioner of the five-member Aeronautics Commission for the Department of Aeronautics.
Smith, the airport manager since January of 2000, has been active in the general aviation industry in Nebraska for many years and was a founding member of the Nebraska Aviation Council (NAC). "I hope to share my knowledge and experience that I’ve developed over the years in the airport industry," said Smith. "I feel very honored to be able to work with the other commissioners and the Department of Aeronautics."
Smith began her career at the Beatrice Airport in 1971 gaining insightful experience in the day-to-day activities and regulations as she fulfilled various duties on her way to becoming manager. Throughout her career Smith volunteered her time and held multiple positions in various aviation organizations, including chairman in 1998 of the NAC.
Smith is active as secretary for the Beatrice Airport Foundation, treasurer of the Flying Conestogas, and a member of the Nebraska Association of Airport Officials. "She knows the general aviation industry in Nebraska," said Kim Stevens, a former director for the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics. "Diana understands the value and importance of general aviation and the economic impact an airport has on its community. She will be a great asset to the Commission."
