Two Airports Added to Military Airport Program

This year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has extended the participation of two airports in the Military Airport Program (MAP) – Millington Regional Jetport in Millington, TN, and Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport in Waynesville, MO.

The program uses federal funds to convert former military airports to civilian use and supports improvements to joint-use airports. The MAP funding is a set-aside of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) that helps increase civilian aviation capacity by financing projects such as building or rehabilitating parking lots, fuel farms, hangars, utility systems, access roads, cargo buildings, and other airfield projects at former military airports.

Millington Regional Jetport is a general aviation airport that will participate in the program for two additional years. The MAP extension will allow the airport to proceed with projects for utility modifications, airfield drainage improvements, and runway lighting rehabilitation.

General aviation airport Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport also will participate in the program for two additional years. The MAP funding will enable projects to proceed for a parallel taxiway, fuel service road, and a wind sock.

Background:

A total of 15 airports may participate in the program at any one time, including three general aviation airports. Airports may be selected or reselected to receive federal financial assistance for up to five years. Since 1990, the FAA has provided airport sponsors with approximately $722 million for a variety of airfield-related projects. Many of these projects are not normally eligible for AIP funding, but projects for MAP-designated airports have unique eligibility rules to convert the airports to civilian or joint-use.

Airports Already Participating in the Program Include:

Brunswick Executive Airport, Brunswick, ME

Alexandria International Airport, Alexandria, LA

Jose Aponte de la Torre Airport, Ceiba, PR
