Canadian Government Invests in Safety at Churchill Falls Airport

Yvonne Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade and Member of Parliament for Labrador, on behalf of the Honorable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, has announced a $98,215 investment for the purchase of a pre-wetting material spreader for the Churchill Falls Airport. This equipment spreads liquid de-icing chemicals onto the rock salt which speeds up the melting of ice on airside surfaces.

The funding comes from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP). Since the Program’s launch in 1995, the Government of Canada has invested more than $834 million for 935 projects at 185 airports across the country.

“The Churchill Falls Airport is an important hub for residents and businesses in this region,” said Yvonne Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental and Northern Affairs and Internal Trade and a Member of Parliament for Labrador. “This investment will help the airport ensure continued safe operation for passengers, flight crews, and employees, who rely on the airport as it supports the regional economy and its social development.”

Canadians, tourists and businesses benefit from safe and well-maintained airports. From visiting friends and family, to travelling to medical appointments, or getting goods to market, we rely on our local airports to support and sustain vibrant communities. These airports also provide essential air services including community resupply, air ambulance, search and rescue and forest fire response.
