Honoring the Legacy of Robert Olislagers: An Aviation Leader, Advocate, and Mentor

The Colorado Division of Aeronautics along with many in the aviation industry, are mourning the loss of Robert Olislagers, former Director and CEO of Centennial Airport (APA). A release from the Division of Aeronautics noted that ‘Robert was more than a colleague; he was a part of our aviation family. His service on the Colorado Aeronautical Board (CAB) from 2014 to 2020, culminating in his role as Chair in 2020 was marked by a deep commitment to advancing aviation in Colorado. His contributions in airport management, aviation security, and sustainability not only shaped the Colorado Aviation System but also had a lasting impact on national policies and industry standards.’

Robert’s influence extended far beyond Centennial Airport. He was a passionate advocate for the aviation community, known for his relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence, ensuring that aviation remained safe, efficient, and forward-thinking.

“Robert’s lifelong commitment and dedication to all things aviation will have an enduring legacy not just across our entire industry, but also deep in the hearts of all of us privileged to know and work with him”, said David Ulane, Aeronautics Division Director for the State of Colorado.

Among his many professional achievements, Robert most recently served as Senior Coordinator for the Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) Initiative. He was a highly respected member of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and the National Air Transportation Association (NATA), where he was honored with the Captain Eldridge Lifetime Achievement Award. His honors also include the National Business Aviation Association’s (NBAA) Silk Scarf Award and his induction into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame in 2021.

“I had the opportunity to work with Robert Olislagers over many years while he led Centennial Airport and later with the EAGLE Initiative,” said Greg Pecoraro, National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) president and CEO. “He was a passionate, creative, and incredibly effective leader in our industry who will be greatly missed.”

Robert will be remembered not only for his numerous accomplishments but also for his mentorship, kindness, unwavering dedication to excellence, and genuine passion for making aviation safer and more accessible. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of aviation professionals.

“Centennial Airport is widely recognized as one of the world’s best general aviation airports, and Robert Olislagers is a primary reason why,” said National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) President and CEO Ed Bolen.  “Robert was an extraordinary aviation professional and human being. An idealist and a pragmatist. A dreamer and a doer. A leader and a servant. He will be greatly missed by everyone who was blessed to work with and learn from him.”

National Air Transportation Association (NATA) President and CEO Curt Castagna said Olislagers was named to the NATA Board of Directors in 2012 and was an active Association member for many years, providing an innate perspective on the intricate connection between airports, tenants, pilots, and communities. “Robert was not only a valued mentor, but a true friend to many of us in aviation. He knew everything about the industry and was willing to share it all. His passing is deeply felt by all those who had the pleasure to know him and the privilege to work with him. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” stated Castagna.
