Colorado Pilot Wins National Grant - State Aviation Journal

Colorado pilot, Dr. Penny Hamilton, was recently awarded a Wolf Aviation Fund research grant to partially fund national research to conduct in-depth interviews with female general aviation students and pilots regarding their flight training experiences.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) only 6% of almost 700,000 active pilots in the United States are women. “Why? That is the big question,” said Dr. Hamilton. “This research project is looking at what barriers do women experience and how might their success rate be improved.”

Penny Hamilton is an award-winning aviation education researcher with earned academic degrees from the University of Nebraska, Columbia College and Temple University. She earned her private pilot license almost 20 years ago. She is a founding Board member and current volunteer secretary of the Friends of the Granby Airport and the Airport Support Network Volunteer for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. She is a member of the 99s, Colorado Aviation Historical Society, Colorado Pilots Association and Women In Aviation International.

Kim Stevens

Kim Stevens is the publisher of State Aviation Journal, which he founded in 2009. A longtime commercial-rated pilot, he was introduced to state aviation in 1992 as Director of the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, later serving as Deputy Division Director for the Arizona Department of Transportation's Aeronautics Division. From 2013 to 2018, he was Director of Communications and Operations for the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) in Washington, D.C. Relocating to North Carolina, Kim worked for the Raleigh-Durham International Airport for two years and now concentrates solely on the Journal. Prior to his aviation career, Kim spent a decade in the newspaper and magazine business.
