NCDOT Announces 2023 Aviation Art Contest Winners

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation announced the winners of the 2023 North Carolina Aviation Art Contest this week. The art contest is an annual competition hosted to inspire and engage young people in aviation. NCDOT received entries from 1,490 students in this year’s contest. After weeks of judging and voting, the winners were announced in the following three age groups:

Senior 10th – Harper Dixon

Junior (born 2012-2015):

  • 1st: Adalyn Thomas of Valdese Elementary School in Valdese
  • 2nd: Nadia Bryant of New Century International Elementary School in Fayetteville
  • 3rd: Sudeep Asam of Morrisville Elementary School in Morrisville

Intermediate (born 2008-2011):

  • 1st: Eva Meyer of Veritas Christian Academy in Fletcher
  • 2nd: Gaille Saelim of Cary Academy in Cary
  • 3rd: Mandy Xiao of Mills Park Middle School in Cary

Senior (born 2004-2007):

Senior 2nd – Audrey Song
  • 1st: Isabel Chang of Cary Academy in Cary
  • 2nd: Audrey Song of Cary Academy in Cary
  • 3rd: Jocelyn Hernandez Jimenez of North Edgecombe High School in Tarboro

This year the top 12 winners in each age group will have their artwork displayed at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. The winning art can also be viewed on the NCDOT Flickr site.

Judging was based on creativity, adherence to this year’s theme of “Air Sports and the Environment,” and technical quality. The N.C. Airports Association sponsors the statewide contest and provides cash prizes to the winners and their schools.

Intermediate 6th – Kaveesh Balaji

The top three students in each age division will also have their artwork submitted in the National Aviation Art Contest in Washington, D.C. The national winners will advance to the international competition.

Entries this year came from 181 hometowns and 151 schools from 54 counties across the state. A total of 11,802 submissions from 720 schools across 93 counties have been entered in the Aviation Art Contest since 2016.
