Teens can jump-start their aviation careers with an opportunity to earn FAA-approved flight hours and learn more about becoming a pilot at the Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus’ Fly K-State Academy this summer from June 13-16.
Students will take part in an immersive four-day experience as they participate in flight instruction and planning and complete three hours of flight time. The skills learned during the camp will include completing a flight plan that culminates in a cross-country flight to Wichita, learning how to take off and land, performing flight maneuvers and utilizing the tools of a professional pilot.
The camp will feature four missions:
- Mission 1 — Students will complete a pre-flight inspection, take-off and landing, and traffic patterns to gain 30 minutes of flight time.
- Mission 2 — Students will learn basic flight maneuvers to earn 30 more minutes of flight time.
- Mission 3 — Students will use K-State Salina’s state-of-the-art flight simulators to experience instrument flight.
- Mission 4 — The camp will culminate with a flight from the Salina Regional Airport to Wichita, with lunch included at the renowned Stearman Field restaurant. Students will earn 90 minutes of flight time in this mission.
The summer program is at the Kansas State University Aerospace and Technology Campus in Salina. The campus offers professional pilot associate or bachelor’s degrees. The campus has a premium fleet of 35 aircraft and flight training devices and is adjacent to a towered airport.
