Recipients of Arizona Airports Association Awards of Excellence Announced

The Arizona Airports Association (AzAA) recognized outstanding individuals and achievements within the aviation industry at its Annual Spring Conference in March. Held in Prescott, Arizona, the event honored key leaders who have made significant contributions to the state’s airports, aviation operations, and overall industry excellence.

Matthew Munden Awarded AzAA President’s Award

Matthew Munden

Matthew Munden, Aeronautics Group Manager at the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), received the prestigious AzAA President’s Award. Outgoing AzAA President Ed Rose (Sedona Airport) presented the award, recognizing Munden’s critical role in defending the Aviation Fund and his ongoing commitment to airport collaboration.

“Matt was instrumental in connecting me with the right ADOT staff to acquire accurate data critical for positioning in defense of the Aviation Fund. His expertise, responsiveness, and steadfast support of Arizona airports have been invaluable,” said Rose during the presentation.

David Reffner Honored with AzAA President’s Award

David Reffner

David Reffner, Airport Manager at Grand Canyon National Park Airport, was likewise awarded the AzAA President’s Award for his dedicated leadership as chair of the Legislative Committee. Rose acknowledged Reffner’s vigilance in monitoring state legislation impacting airports and his strategic efforts to improve AzAA’s visibility.

“David’s passion for Arizona airports has been essential to strengthening the association’s advocacy efforts. His awareness of proposed legislation and commitment to keeping AzAA informed made a significant impact during my presidency,” Rose remarked.

Sarah Demory Named Airport Executive of the Year

Sarah Demory, AAE, ACE, Assistant Aviation Director and Chief Operating Officer for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department, was awarded the AzAA Airport Executive of the Year Award. Through this recognition, AzAA highlighted Demory’s exemplary leadership in airport operations and her steadfast commitment to advancing aviation across Arizona.

“Sarah embodies the highest standards of leadership, operational excellence, and public service. Her vision and dedication continuously enhance the passenger experience, aviation partnerships, and broader community benefits,” AzAA noted.

Mike Hunter Receives Corporate Member of the Year Award

Michael Hunter

Mike Hunter, Vice President at JE Dunn Construction, was honored with the AzAA Corporate Member of the Year Award. Hunter was recognized not only for his 40 years of contributions to the construction industry but also for his proactive collaboration with AzAA.

“Mike has provided incredible support to AzAA, both on and off the board, and has set a tremendous example in his leadership, relationship-building, and project outcomes. As he prepares for retirement, he has ensured a smooth transition in his role while continuing to contribute to the industry’s success. He has truly earned this award,” AzAA stated.
