Mac McCall has announced that he is stepping down from his position as manager of the Sedona Airport. In a message to all of his family, friends and co-workers in aviation, McCall said his contract to manage Sedona is at an end, so he decided to retire after 37 years in airport management.
McCAll said the thirteen years he has been at the Sedona Airport was great fun after spending twenty-five years at Chicago’s O’Hare. "We were able to bring Sedona into the jet age," said McCall. He guided the airport in making improvements with a runway widening project and numerous upgrades which allowed Fortune 500 CEOs to hold their annual meetings in Sedona. "The result of the word of mouth with other jet owners carried the airport during the GA [general aviation] downturn so we were able to stay in the black."
During Arizona Senator John McCain’s run for the presidency, McCall said there was great excitement as the Senator would regularly use the airport to get to his Sedona residence. "I got calls and every bribe you can think of from every news outlet in the world asking to let them know what people came
into the airport," said McCall. "But we kept mum."
Over the years McCall has maintained an airport and aviation consulting business at major airports around the country. He will continue to operate that business at least on a limited basis. "Since I turned 62 I have decided not to want to be anywhere on a daily basis.
McCall said he will be relocating to the greater Phoenix area. "Sedona is too far from Sky Harbor and has added way too much time to my travels around the country." McCall said he has refrained from taking on clients in Arizona since he worked at Sedona but now may do so. "I have had a great relationship with the ADOT Aeronautics Group and the Arizona Airports Association and am sure we will continue to work together on projects around the state."
Sedona is in the first stage of a nationwide search for McCall’s replacement.
