The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) today announced Kerry Lynch, Aviation International News (AIN) senior editor – business aviation, as the recipient of this year’s David W. Ewald Platinum Wing Award for her lifetime achievement and excellence in journalism.
The Gold Wing Award for Journalism Excellence was presented to Business Jet Traveler (BJT) contributor James Wynbrandt for his article: “Flying in the Age of COVID-19,” published in the fall of 2020.
Lynch joined AIN in December 2014 after a 25-year career with the Aviation Week. During her time there, she steered The Weekly of Business Aviation for five years and also oversaw business aviation content on the Aviation Week Intelligence Network. In 2012 she additionally became the Washington columnist for Business & Commercial Aviation magazine. Lynch also spent nearly five years as the Washington columnist for Aviation Week’s Overhaul & Maintenance monthly magazine.
She received the 2003 NBAA Gold Wing Award for her Business & Commercial Aviation article, “Ghost Town On The Potomac,” and was the 2004 recipient of the National Air Transportation Association’s Aviation Journalism Excellence Award.
“NBAA is proud to honor Kerry today with the Platinum Wing Award,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “Over many years covering aviation, she has stood as one of journalism’s leading lights, bringing keen insight and sharp perspective to her coverage of the industry. She is most deserving of this honor.”
As the industry grappled with COVID-19, Wynbrandt’s article looked at how a revamped business aviation landscape would affect everyone from single-pilot operators to charter users, and how to best deal with changes resulting from the pandemic.
“The consensus is that in the long term the pandemic will bring business aviation many new customers who are concerned about the health risks of commercial aviation,” the article concludes.

“A year ago, when we were all still figuring out how to operate safely during the pandemic, James wrote a terrific article for Business Jet Traveler magazine, on Flying in the Age of COVID-19,” said Bolen. “Many times, over the last 18 months, day-to-day business has been confusing, even overwhelming. James helped make it clear and manageable.”
Wynbrandt is a multi-engine instrument-rated pilot and regular BJT contributor who also has written for the New York Times, Forbes and Barron’s.
