Victoria Int’l Airport Receives New Funding for Critical Infrastructure Projects

As Canada works towards recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, investments in airport infrastructure continue to be crucial to maintain safety, security, and connectivity for travelers, workers and communities. Government of Canada investments also help ensure Canada’s aviation industry is well-positioned to recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Annie Koutrakis, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, the Honorable Omar Alghabra, announced more than $4 million in new funding to help British Columbia’s Victoria International Airport recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and to support continued air services and important transportation infrastructure projects at the airport.

“The Victoria International Airport is a key transportation hub not just for Victoria, but for much of Vancouver Island. It connects us with family and friends, helps us discover new destinations, and is a pivotal trade corridor for many Victoria businesses,” said Koutrakis. “This funding will enhance airport safety for travelers, air crews and airport workers, while supporting jobs and our regional economy.”

The airport will receive more than $1.3 million from Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program for upgrades to the lighting for the approach to Runway 09. The work will include, installation of new land-based and water-based lighting systems, with the water-based fixtures being structurally reinforced to withstand impacts from barges that work in the area; and reconfiguration and extension of the existing floatplane dock to accommodate the new lighting system.

In addition to funding for the infrastructure projects, the Government of Canada also provided the airport with over $3 million from Transport Canada’s Airport Relief Fund to help it maintain continued airport operations and essential air services for residents and workers in Victoria and surrounding communities.

The King County Sheriff Air Support and King County Search Dog Units conducted a joint training mission at Bander State Airport May 10.

Bandera State Airport, located along Interstate 90 east of North Bend at Exit 45 Forest Service Road 9030, provided space for aircrews to familiarize the dogs and their handler teams with operating in and around helicopters.

The training session allowed helicopter crews valuable training time with dogs within the helicopter setting to include actual hoist lifting operation practice.

King County has used Bandera State Airport many times over the years for this type of training and for actual lifesaving rescue operations. The airport is one of 15 State-Managed Airports commonly used for police and fire rescue training exercises.

For more information about how to request the use of a state-managed airport for training purposes, please contact the State-Airports Manager Paul Wolf at 360-618-2477 or wolfp@wsdot.wa.gov

AASHTO, NASAO Applaud Senate Committee for Approving Legislation to Support Advanced Air Mobility Planning

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) today applauded the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for approving the Advanced Aviation Infrastructure Modernization Act (S.4246) in the Senate.

“It is critical to have federal, state, local, tribal, and other transportation stakeholders working together on this issue,” said AASHTO Executive Director Jim Tymon. “We need to ensure the safe integration of this new technology into our transportation network, and we would like to congratulate the Senate Commerce Committee and the legislation sponsors for their bi-partisan work to plan for this exciting new era in transportation. With the recent House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passage of companion legislation, our states look forward to this important bill being signed into law.”

“State aviation leaders appreciate this initiative by Senators Padilla and Moran to provide much needed support to state, local and tribal governments as they plan for these emerging aeronautical technologies” said Greg Pecoraro, NASAO President and CEO. “We are glad that Congress recognizes these resources are critical in assuring that the public interest is met in their safe and accessible integration into the National Aviation System.”

The Advanced Aviation Infrastructure Modernization (AAIM) Act, introduced by Senators Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Jerry Moran (R-KS), authorizes a $25 million grant program for state, local, tribal governments, transit agencies, port authorities, and metropolitan planning organizations to plan the infrastructure needed to support advanced air mobility (AAM) operations. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee recently approved its version of the AAIM Act (H.R. 6270), which was introduced by Representatives Rick Larsen (D-WA-2), Garret Graves (R-LA-6), and Dina Titus (D-NV-1). AASHTO and NASAO are key supporters of the bill.

Revv Aviation Expands to Omaha with Flight School Opening at Eppley Airfield

With a flight school in Council Bluffs that serves more than 250 students, Revv Aviation, formerly Advanced Air, is expanding its operations on June 1 to Eppley Airfield in Omaha.

The expansion allows for advanced aviation training, including multi-engine instruction and tower communications skills in addition to beginning flight lessons.

“We have about 120 students who fly as part of the University of Nebraska-Omaha Part-141 flight program, and this will make it more convenient and accessible for some of those students,” said Jerome Howard, Chief Flight Instructor for Revv Aviation. “It also allows for advanced flight instructions where students learn proper tower and ground controller communications in a more dense flying environment.”

Revv Aviation is leasing offices at the TAC Air fixed-base operator (FBO), at 3737 Orville Plaza, at Eppley.

“We’re going to start with two Cessna 172 trainers and two multi-engine Piper Seminoles,” said Howard.

Students can begin signing up for lessons immediately by calling 712-314-2444 or by emailing Jerome.howard@revvaviation.com.

In addition to this expansion, Revv Aviation offers a full suite of aviation services at its Midwest FBO hubs, including Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Davenport and Muscatine, Iowa; Janesville, Wis.; and Aurora and Schaumburg, Ill.

“We have experienced great success with our flight school in Council Bluffs and see tremendous potential to expand pilot training to all current and want-to-be aviators in the Omaha Metropolitan Area,” said Guy Lieser, Revv Aviation CEO. “Our pilot training is a signature phase of service offerings we plan to offer at Eppley Airfield. Our goal is to expand flight training offerings to accommodate the ever-impending demand for pilots, mechanics and technicians.”

“Having Revv at Eppley will make it a lot more convenient for many of our flight students,” said Scott Vlasek, faculty member at the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. “Besides being convenient, the tower communications at Eppley will fulfill a critical aspect of pilot instruction.”

Revv Aviation is one of nine companies in the CL Enterprises family investment portfolio. CL Enterprises mantra is “Small Towns. Big Ideas” and has a mission to help revitalize communities by providing living-wage careers and good paying jobs.
