The notices, forcing tenants to vacate by December 31, were issued by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, which owns the airport.

Tenants were notified in June that their hangars would be torn down because of “critical repair and condition issues.” While the state says it will continue to offer tie downs for now, the eviction would likely force two businesses at the airport—a flight school and a maintenance shop—to close their doors. Many aircraft at Aeroflex-Andover, including the flight school’s, are vintage, fabric-covered airplanes that cannot be stored outside.

“I visited Aeroflex-Andover shortly after the eviction was announced this summer to meet with tenants. Based on the state’s assertions, I expected to walk into dilapidated hangars that were falling apart, but that’s not remotely what I found,” said AOPA Vice President of Airports and State Advocacy Leon Jackler. “The hangars are historically and architecturally significant, having been constructed in a classic style from solid concrete block, providing a ‘golden age’ experience for pilots and visitors. While the hangars may need some minor repairs and updates, they are in overall excellent shape.”

Independent engineers have since examined the structures at Aeroflex-Andover Airport. Their findings contradict the assessment of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the Forest Fire Service, and they estimate remediation would cost far less than demolition.

“We are disappointed that the state of New Jersey has decided to move forward with their plan to demolish the historic hangars that make Aeroflex-Andover a great airport,” said AOPA Eastern Regional Manager Sean Collins. “While the notices have gone out, our efforts to keep these hangars open are not stopping. We have spoken with local and state officials. We are also continuing to push for a meeting with Governor Mikie Sherrill to address this issue. So far, we have not heard back.” “Nestled in a state park between two lakes, Aeroflex-Andover is everything a pilot could want in a general aviation airport,” said Jackler. “And amid a nationwide hangar shortage, the impending closure of a private airport in the state, and the economic benefits that GA provides for local communities, we will continue to work to reverse this short-sighted decision.”

Josh Cochran photo – The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) expressed disappointment at the issuance of eviction notices to tenants at Aeroflex-Andover Airport (12N) in Sussex County, New Jersey.
