{"id":34315,"date":"2026-03-01T14:37:52","date_gmt":"2026-03-01T14:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=34315"},"modified":"2026-03-01T14:38:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T14:38:23","slug":"faa-radar-data-feed-activated-in-north-dakota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/north-dakota\/faa-radar-data-feed-activated-in-north-dakota\/%20","title":{"rendered":"FAA Radar Data Feed Activated in North Dakota"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Senator John Hoeven announced last week the activation of the Vantis Federal Radar Data Enclave, a secure integration of unfiltered radar data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vantisuas.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vantisuas.com\/\">Vantis<\/a> system at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npuasts.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.npuasts.com\/\">Northern Plains Unmanned Aerial Systems<\/a> (UAS) Test Site.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoeven-Announced.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoeven-Announced.jpg 395w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Hoeven-Announced-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Senator Hoeven (center) announces activation.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The test site is the first non-federal entity in the nation to have access to the FAA\u2019s unfiltered radar data feed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The enclave establishes North Dakota as the national model for managing UAS traffic in the National Airspace (NAS) and gives three competitive advantages to the state:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enables operators to fly UAS beyond visual line of site (BVLOS) statewide, while also allowing for more frequent BVLOS flights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides capabilities needed to address counter-drone and national security concerns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This bolsters efforts like the Point Defense Battle Lab that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoeven.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/hoeven-grand-forks-taking-two-major-steps-forward-in-counter-uas-leadership\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hoeven.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/hoeven-grand-forks-taking-two-major-steps-forward-in-counter-uas-leadership\">Hoeven worked to bring<\/a> to the Grand Forks Air Force Base. The battle lab is focused on protecting domestic military bases against threats arising from the misuse of unmanned aircraft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These capabilities are needed to protect critical infrastructure and high-profile events, like the 2026 World Cup and America\u2019s 250th anniversary celebrations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creates new opportunities for UAS research and development that are not possible anywhere else in the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The initiative comes as a result of Hoeven\u2019s efforts to pass the 2024 FAA reauthorization bill that included a requirement that the FAA evaluate how its radar data feeds could help integrate UAS into the national airspace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Following this, Hoeven worked with then-FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker to set up the program in North Dakota and grant the state\u2019s test site access to the FAA\u2019s radar data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hoeven first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoeven.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/hoeven-faa-northern-plains-uas-test-site-reach-agreement-to-share-unfiltered-radar-data-feed\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hoeven.senate.gov\/news\/news-releases\/hoeven-faa-northern-plains-uas-test-site-reach-agreement-to-share-unfiltered-radar-data-feed\">announced this agreement<\/a> between the FAA and the test site at the 2024 UAS Summit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The senator has since been supporting efforts by the FAA, the test site and their partners, including the Thales Group, to install the required technology and validate the system\u2019s security with the relevant federal agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"395\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Hoeven.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34318\" style=\"width:210px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Hoeven.jpg 395w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Hoeven-300x175.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Sen. Federal radar data is one of the most comprehensive sources of airspace awareness available. We recognized that bringing this data feed to our state was essential for raising our UAS and counter-UAS operations to the next level. That\u2019s why we worked to create this initiative through the 2024 FAA reauthorization bill and to set it up in North Dakota,\u201d said Senator Hoeven. \u201cNo other state offers this level of capabilities, and it would take years for this type of system to be implemented anywhere else.
