{"id":34284,"date":"2026-02-23T17:16:57","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T17:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=34284"},"modified":"2026-02-23T17:19:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T17:19:25","slug":"long-time-airport-director-brian-weiler-announces-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/news\/airports\/long-time-airport-director-brian-weiler-announces-retirement\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Long-time Airport Director Brian Weiler Announces Retirement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Brian Weiler, who has been director of the Springfield-Branson National Airport since 2011, informed the Airport Board of his intention to retire summer 2026 during their Feb. 19 regular meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been the honor and privilege of my professional career to lead the airport during this period of strong growth and change,\u201d he told the board. \u201cWe have a well-functioning board and great staff team here that will keep things moving forward, and I will do everything possible to help with a smooth transition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Brian-Weiler-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34286\" style=\"width:456px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Brian-Weiler-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Brian-Weiler-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Brian-Weiler-2.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Brian Weiler, who has been director of SGF since 2011, announced his retirement.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>During his tenure, SGF airline passengers and direct routes have more than doubled and over $100 million in improvement projects have been completed. Notable projects include a new American Airlines maintenance base completed in 2021, expanded General Aviation Terminal in 2024 and multiple upgrades occurring both inside and out to the main Airline Terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Weiler said his greatest joy has come from working with young people wanting a career in aviation. He is proud SGF is now home to Ozarks Tech\u2019s pilot and airplane mechanic training programs, as well as Springfield Public Schools\u2019 Fly SPS program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weiler has had a 40-year career in aviation, starting as an air traffic controller in the U.S. Marine Corps out of high school. He went on to be a private pilot, aeronautics administrator for the Missouri Department of Transportation, and he managed four other airports in Missouri, Kansas and Florida before coming to Springfield.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrian has been an exceptional leader for the Springfield-Branson National Airport, guiding critical growth, record passenger service and strong partnerships that have elevated our regional connectivity,\u201d said City Manager David Cameron. \u201cHis dedication to excellence and the community has strengthened not only the airport but also the broader economy of Springfield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 15 years, Weiler is the third longest serving airport director at Springfield, behind Lester Jones, who was director 22 years from 1947 to 1969, and Robert Hancik, who was director 32 years from 1972 to 2004.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current Airport Board Chair, Jamie Holstein, joined the full board in thanking Weiler for his strong service to the region.
