{"id":33132,"date":"2025-10-20T19:55:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T19:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/?p=33132"},"modified":"2025-10-20T19:55:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T19:55:28","slug":"floating-cloud-of-cherished-treasures-inspires-wonder-at-msp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/news\/airports\/floating-cloud-of-cherished-treasures-inspires-wonder-at-msp\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Floating Cloud of Cherished Treasures Inspires Wonder at MSP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An expansive floating cloud of metal forms now sparks intrigue and reflection at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internationally renowned artist Kipp Kobayashi\u2019s \u201cThe Dreams We Carry\u201d rises within the two-story Concourse G Rotunda in Terminal 1 \u2014 near gates G18-22 \u2014 offering views from below or through the windows of MSP\u2019s newest Delta Sky Club lounge. The 45-foot-wide collection of hanging sculptures reflects ever-changing light and hints at the unique stories represented by the suspended objects \u2014 from everyday companions like favorite pets, cameras and blue jeans to treasured pieces such as rocking chairs, pianos, guitars, houseplants and a beloved teddy bear.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSP-arts.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33134\" style=\"width:373px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSP-arts.jpg 700w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MSP-arts-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u201cThe Dreams We Carry,\u201d by Kipp Kobayashi, in Concourse G at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Photos courtesy of the Metropolitan Airports Commission<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018The Dreams We Carry\u2019 transforms the rotunda into a place of imagination and reflection, where travelers and visitors can pause and consider the many personal stories that converge at MSP,\u201d said Ben Owen, director of Arts@MSP, a program of the Airport Foundation MSP. \u201cThis installation celebrates the creativity, diversity and shared experiences that make our airport \u2014 and our state \u2014 uniquely special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kobayashi created more than 300 suspended objects, each hand-sculpted from stainless steel wire mesh and filled with items Minnesotans and travelers told the artist they most cherished \u2014 what they would bring on an imaginary one-way trip to a destination of their choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Dreams We Carry\u201d features an iconic, well-loved teddy bear. Arts@MSP invites the community to give it a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKobayashi\u2019s masterful artwork is the capstone element in the recently expanded end of Concourse G that features the dynamic rotunda space, more gate seating and concessions, as well as the new Sky Club,\u201d said Brian Ryks, CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which owns and operates MSP. \u201cIt will certainly welcome and inspire those who are traveling through the space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kobayashi was commissioned to design and install \u201cThe Dreams We Carry\u201d in the fall of 2022 through the <a href=\"https:\/\/airportfoundation.org\/about-us\/artsmsp\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/airportfoundation.org\/about-us\/artsmsp\/\">Arts@MSP program<\/a>, a partnership between the Airport Foundation MSP and the MAC. He is a Los Angeles-based artist, teacher and arts advocate with numerous public and private art commissions that demonstrate his talent for working collaboratively across disciplines, often bridging art, architecture and engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1127596917\/6e5c99c3fe\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/1127596917\/6e5c99c3fe\">Check out the video<\/a> that captures the inspiration, creation and installation of \u201cThe Dreams We Carry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engagement process behind \u201cThe Dreams We Carry\u201d was just as expansive as the artwork itself. Kobayashi interacted with dozens of groups and hundreds of Twin Cities residents and MSP travelers whose stories informed the concept and revealed the treasures that bring people together and define a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the installation began to fill in, passersby would gather, pointing out the different shapes and objects, asking one another what they saw,\u201d said Kobayashi. \u201cI hope this activity allows each individual to make their own personal connection to these narratives \u2014 allowing them to think, reflect and dream up dreams of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sculpture joins a growing collection of 80 permanent works at MSP curated by the Arts@MSP program. The project is funded by the MSP Percent for Arts and Culture Program \u2014 a dedicated source of arts funding derived from public-facing capital improvement projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe artwork adds another unique experiential landmark in the terminal and provides visitors a new lasting impression and cultural link to our state,\u201d said Rick King, chair of the Metropolitan Airports Commission. \u201cIt\u2019s these types of installations, through our partnership with Airport Foundation and its Arts@MSP program, which continue to strengthen our award-winning facilities and amplify our best-in-class passenger experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, MSP was once again named the best mega airport for customer and traveler satisfaction in the annual J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study.
