{"id":28700,"date":"2024-05-20T15:44:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-20T15:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=28700"},"modified":"2024-05-20T15:46:52","modified_gmt":"2024-05-20T15:46:52","slug":"auvsi-testifies-at-congressional-hearing-on-impact-of-drones-on-law-enforcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/unmanned-systems\/auvsi-testifies-at-congressional-hearing-on-impact-of-drones-on-law-enforcement\/%20","title":{"rendered":"AUVSI Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Impact of Drones on Law Enforcement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Michael Robbins, President and CEO of the Association for\nUncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), testified before the U.S. House\nof Representatives on how first responders are using drones to aid in public\nsafety missions and emergency response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The joint hearing on \u201cUnmanned Aerial Systems: An\nExamination of the Use of Drones in Emergency Response\u201d was hosted by the\nCommittee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Emergency Management and\nTechnology and Subcommittee on Counterterrorism, Law Enforcement, and\nIntelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe use of our industry\u2019s technology in public safety is\nunquestionably a very positive use case,\u201d stated Robbins. \u201cDrones are saving\nlives in emergency response operations. They are being relied on to reduce the\nrisk posed to first responders, every day, in communities across the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auvsi.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-05-16-EMT%26CTI-HRG-Testimony-Robbins.pdf\">Written testimony<\/a> covered the need for Congress to enact grant programs to support public safety agencies&#8217; transition to secure UAS, the need to bolster the domestic manufacturing supply chain, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airspace access constraints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other hearing witnesses were Kaz Daughtry, Deputy\nCommissioner, Operations, New York City Police Department; John M. Chell, Chief\nof Patrol, Patrol Services Bureau, New York City Police Department; Kevin\nFetterman, Division Chief, Command and Emergency Planning, Orange County Fire\nAuthority, On behalf of the International Association of Fire Chiefs; and Rahul\nSidhu, Founder and CEO, Aerodome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During opening remarks, Emergency Management and Technology\nSubcommittee Chairman Anthony D\u2019Esposito (R-NY) said, \u201cThe benefits of drone\nuse in emergency response are far-reaching. As police departments look to\nexpand their use of UAS technology, it is important that they take stock of any\nunintended national security concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important that the federal government and\nintelligence community continue to share any guidance and relevant security\ninformation so that law enforcement agencies and first responders are able to\ntake necessary precautions while not stifling innovative tools,\u201d continued D\u2019Esposito.\n\u201cFurther, it is important that the U.S. House of Representatives examine any\nregulatory barriers to public safety agencies when looking to utilize emerging\ntechnologies. We need to work with you to make sure you have the ability to\nkeep your communities safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next month, AUVSI plans to convene its members for its\nannual Hill Day to discuss these issues and more.
