{"id":28387,"date":"2024-04-15T17:04:29","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T17:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=28387"},"modified":"2024-04-15T17:04:31","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T17:04:31","slug":"girl-scouts-of-san-jacinto-council-achieve-new-heights-with-discover-aviation-patch-at-lone-star-flight-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/texas\/girl-scouts-of-san-jacinto-council-achieve-new-heights-with-discover-aviation-patch-at-lone-star-flight-museum\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Achieve New Heights With \u201cDiscover Aviation Patch\u201d at Lone Star Flight Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 120 enthusiastic Girl Scouts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gssjc.org\/\">Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council<\/a> (GSSJC) earned the coveted \u201cDiscover Aviation Patch\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lonestarflight.org\/\">Lone Star Flight Museum<\/a> on Saturday, March 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several successful women aviation leaders spoke to the girls\nduring a luncheon seminar about their career experiences, insights, and advice.\nSpeakers included Shelly deZevallos, GSSJC board member and recognized aviation\nthought leader and licensed pilot with 30 years of experience in the aviation\nand airport industry, and Autumn \u201cPepper\u201d Rhodes, former Girl Scout Gold Award\nrecipient, certified private pilot, and college freshman at Rice University\nwhere she studies mechanical engineering and astronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Discover-Aviation-Patch-Houston-TX-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28388\" width=\"270\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Discover-Aviation-Patch-Houston-TX-edit.jpg 550w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Discover-Aviation-Patch-Houston-TX-edit-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Discover-Aviation-Patch-Houston-TX-edit-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Discover-Aviation-Patch-Houston-TX-edit-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWatching Girl Scouts explore the world of aviation is truly\ninspiring,\u201d said deZevallos. \u201cThe \u2018Discover Aviation Patch\u2019 has the power to\ninfluence the career aspirations of young girls and pioneer a future where\nwomen&#8217;s contributions in aviation know no bounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGirl Scouts has been an influential part of my life from\nwhen I was Daisy on my first camping trip to an Ambassador earning my Gold\nAward,\u201d said Rhodes. \u201cI would certainly not be the young woman I am today\nwithout Girl Scouts. Having the opportunity to collaborate with GSSJC after\ncontacting them about my Gold Award project, \u2018Girls Who Soar,\u2019 was truly\nsurreal, and I am honored to be a part of the aviation initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girl Scouts from Daisies to Ambassadors immersed themselves\nin aviation history and the science of flight. The girls learned about the\nrange of careers available in the aviation industry while paying tribute to\nRosie the Riveter, an iconic symbol of female empowerment whose legacy of\nincreased opportunities for women resonates throughout American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cDiscover Aviation\u201d Patch resulted from a year-long\ncollaboration between GSSJC and the Lone Star Flight Museum. This partnership\naims to provide young girls with immersive experiences to fulfill patch\nrequirements through engaging activities covering a wide range of topics,\nincluding aviation safety and the significance of effective aircraft\ncommunication. The Discover Aviation program is based upon the innovative and\nhands-on aviation and STEM programs offered at the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Girl Scouts ages K-12 explored aviation topics and chose\nfrom 22 age-appropriate activities designed to spark their interest and\ncuriosity in the industry. They also demonstrated their knowledge of the\nfundamental sciences of flight by operating a real Mooney Ovation aircraft. As\nthis patch program is ongoing beyond this event, Girl Scouts can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learn about the fundamental elements of flight\nand aircraft design.<\/li><li>Learn about the impact of women in aviation\nhistory.<\/li><li>Prepare and fly their own plan in state\u00e2\u0080\u0090of\u00e2\u0080\u0090the\u00e2\u0080\u0090art\nflight simulators.<\/li><li>Explore aviation careers, meet, and get inspired\nby female aviation leaders who will share their experiences in the aviation\nindustry.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith only 7% of pilots nationwide being female, we\nrecognized the importance of introducing young women to the boundless\nopportunities within the field of aviation,\u201d said Mary Vitek, GSSJC CEO. \u201cOur\ncollaboration with the Lone Star Flight Museum is instrumental in igniting this\npassion and showcasing the many avenues available to these aspiring young\nwomen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the eager participants was 8-year-old Brownie, Kacie\nMoore. Excited to earn her \u201cDiscover Aviation Patch\u201d she said, \u201cI can\u2019t wait to\nexplore the planes and learn what it takes to become a pilot!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Echoing her granddaughter\u2019s enthusiasm, Kacie\u2019s grandmother,\na retired engineer, emphasized the potential of this collaboration in expanding\nhorizons for young women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daisie and Brownie Girl Scouts explored the museum with\ntroop leaders and learned about the forces of flight while interacting with\naircraft models and viewing the museum\u2019s collection of aircraft. Older Girl\nScouts, including Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, conducted a\npre-flight check, flew a simulated mission, and learned about the history of\nflight with a guided tour of the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concluding the day\u2019s activities was a special ceremony\nduring which each participating Girl Scout was presented with her hard-earned\n\u201cDiscover Aviation\u201d patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCollaborating with the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council\nrepresents a key step in introducing aviation and STEM career opportunities to\ngirls,\u201d said Ann Hobing, senior director of education and outreach at the Lone\nStar Flight Museum. \u201cWe believe aviation inspires achievement and endless\npossibilities.
