Photo courtesy of David Tulis\/AOPA.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you call it a practice or a dress rehearsal, AOPA calls\nit a complete success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four aircraft took off from Frederick Municipal Airport on\nMarch 24, and headed for the skies over the National Mall in Washington, D.C.,\non a test run for the AOPA National Celebration of General Aviation Flyover, to\nbe held on May 11. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have spent many hours planning for the event, but there\nis nothing like flying the actual route and testing all factors,\u201d said AOPA\nVice President of Airports and State Advocacy Mike Ginter, who will also serve\nas the air boss for the upcoming celebration. \u201cWe learned a lot from this\nwarmup flight and are even more excited for the May event\u2014it will truly be a\nonce-in-a-lifetime celebration for those flying and all of the aviation\nenthusiasts around the world tuning in to our live feed.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AOPA President Mark Baker lifted off from Frederick at 11:46\na.m. in his Cessna Caravan, followed by Pete Muntean in his American Champion\nSuper Decathlon, Adam Williams in his Rockwell Commander, and Ginter in his\nBeechcraft Bonanza A36. The flight of four headed toward D.C., turning over the\nPotomac River and down Independence Avenue next to the National Mall, not far\nfrom the U.S. Capitol. The flyover route that the four pilots followed\u2014and that\nmany more will follow in May\u2014passes through Washington&#8217;s most sensitive\nairspace, prohibited area P-56, where no GA aircraft has been allowed to fly\nsince the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of my favorite things about GA is always discovering\nsomething new,\u201d Baker said after landing. \u201cThis flight gave me a view of\nWashington that is rarely seen, and I can\u2019t wait for May and the real thing!\nEveryone associated with GA should tune in on May 11, since we are all part of\nthis amazing story.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baker will lead the GA flyover in his Beechcraft Staggerwing\n17, followed by a wide array of aircraft representing GA\u2019s storied history. The\nmore than 60 aircraft, comprising 20 different \u201cchapters,\u201d will tell the story\nof GA in the United States, from those in the Golden Age and representing GA\nafter World War II to the GA trainer era, vertical flight, backcountry flying,\nseaplanes, corporate and business aviation, technically advanced aircraft,\nexperimental homebuilts, airshow performers, and other examples of GA aircraft\nthat support public service missions. The event will also showcase\ntechnological advancements that have greatly advanced GA\u2019s safety record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flyover is being closely coordinated with 15 interagency\npartners including the FAA, the Transportation Security Administration, the\nSecret Service, and the Capitol Police, and has the support of Congress. It\nwill be broadcast live on AOPA\u2019s YouTube channel with commentary from longtime\nAOPA Live This Week host Tom Haines and noted journalist Miles O\u2019Brien. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration will also coincide with AOPA\u2019s eighty-fifth\nanniversary in May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe history of GA and our own AOPA story are so\nintertwined.
