Russ Meyer Jr. was presented the title award of the night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter every Hoover awards, we ask ourselves \u2018how are we\ngoing to top that event?\u2019\u201d said AOPA President Mark Baker. \u201cOnce again, we have\nsucceeded. This year\u2019s celebration was full of energy and excitement, bringing\ntogether many of our aviation friends and celebrating special leaders who keep\nour GA community vibrant and strong.\u201d  \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/24-Hoover-Awards-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28206\" width=\"281\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/24-Hoover-Awards-edit.jpg 688w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/24-Hoover-Awards-edit-300x281.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><figcaption><em> R.A. Photo by David Tulis <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The R.A. \u201cBob\u201d Hoover Trophy is one of the most\ndistinguished recognitions in aviation\u2014reserved for those who inspire a love\nfor flight through their airmanship, leadership, mentorship, and passion for\naviation. Previous recipients include Sean D. Tucker, Harrison Ford, Clay Lacy,\nBurt Rutan, Wally Funk, and Sen. James M. Inhofe. Meyer joins these aviation\nlegends as the 2024 recipient for his enduring commitment and impact on the\ngeneral aviation industry.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meyer started in aviation as a jet pilot with the U.S Air\nForce. His career has included terms as President and Chief Executive Officer\nof Grumman American Aviation Corporation and as CEO and Chairman Emeritus of\nCessna Aircraft\u2014where he played a significant role in creating the original\nCessna Citation, as well as Cessna\u2019s Be A Pilot program.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A commercial, instrument-rated pilot with more than 17,000\nhours of flight time, Meyer is type-rated in all models of the Cessna Citation.\nHis friendship with Bob Hoover\u2014the inspirational U.S. Air Force veteran and\nairshow display pilot for who the award was named\u2014spanned more than 50 years.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor a long-time aviator like me, it is clearly the honor of a lifetime,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cI could not be more grateful, and I count my blessings every single day to have devoted my career to aviation.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were five additional prestigious awards bestowed\nduring the celebration.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly renamed Richard G. McSpadden General Aviation\nSafety Award was presented\nto John and Martha King for delivering high quality instructional learning\nmaterials to over a million pilots in various stages of training. Over the past\n50 years, the Kings have become synonymous with safety and flight training\nexcellence.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theresa Claiborne, the first African American female pilot\nin the U.S. Air Force, was honored with the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee\nAviation Inspiration Award. She is currently the president of \u201cSisters of the\nSkies,\u201d a non-profit organization which introduces aviation to women of color.\nThe award is presented annually to an individual who, like General McGee,\npersevered to overcome challenges en route to learning to fly\u2014all while\ninspiring others along the way.  \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hartranft Award, given to an elected or appointed\ngovernment official for significant contributions to general aviation, was\npresented to U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, who currently serves as the chairman of the\nU.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Throughout his career\nin Congress, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that general aviation continues\nto thrive. It marked the\nsecond time Graves has won the award, named after AOPA\u2019s first\npresident and former chairman of the board \u201cDoc\u201d Hartranft.  \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sharples Award is given to individuals who have made\nextraordinary contributions to GA, allowing us to enjoy our shared passion. The\nrecipient of this year\u2019s award was John Dobson, President of the Washington\nPilots Association, who also helps direct the Washington State Aviation\nAlliance, through which he is fiercely advocating for general aviation and\nairport funding.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lessing Stern, a longtime supporter of AOPA\u2019s safety\nprograms and an early advocate for the You Can Fly program, was honored with\nthe AOPA Foundation Future of Flight Award.
