{"id":28110,"date":"2024-03-11T18:11:07","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T18:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=28110"},"modified":"2024-03-11T18:11:09","modified_gmt":"2024-03-11T18:11:09","slug":"virginia-takes-major-action-to-prepare-airport-infrastructure-for-advanced-air-mobility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/virginia\/virginia-takes-major-action-to-prepare-airport-infrastructure-for-advanced-air-mobility\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Takes Major Action to Prepare Airport Infrastructure for Advanced Air Mobility"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To prepare the 65 public-use airports in Virginia for the\narrival of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles, the Virginia Aviation Board\n(VAB) and the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) are making funding\navailable to support bringing 3-phase electrical power and broadband\nconnectivity to these airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having 3-phase power and broadband connectivity at all\nairports in Virginia is vital to the operations of AAM service providers.&nbsp; Three-phase electric enables providers to\nrecharge the batteries that supply power to the aircraft, and broadband\nconnectivity enables command, control and communication features that enhance\nthe safe operation of these aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board\u2019s action makes up to $200,000 available to each\nairport that is interested in improving its readiness for the launch of AAM\nservices.&nbsp; Under this initiative,\neligible projects approved by the VAB during the current calendar year will\nbenefit from a state participation rate of 95 percent, meaning the airport will\nbe responsible for just 5 percent of the project expenditures.&nbsp; (Typically, the DOAV provides up to 80 percent\nof approved costs of utility-type projects and requires that 20 percent of the\ncost be borne by the airport owner.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVirginia wants to remain a national leader in aviation, and\nthe action of the VAB in approving funding for 3-phase power and broadband\nconnectivity is a tangible demonstration of this,\u201d said Greg Campbell, director\nof the DOAV.&nbsp; \u201cWe want everyone in the\nnascent AAM industry to know that Virginia not only welcomes them but is\nfinancially supporting the industry and our communities by ensuring critical\ninfrastructure is available to them for the safe operation of these vehicles.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Commonwealth of Virginia does not own any of the\n65 public-use airports in the state, the DOAV provides about $40 million in\nannual financial assistance to cities, towns, counties and other governmental\nsubdivisions for the planning, development, construction, and operation of\nairports, landing fields, and other aviation facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VAB Chairman Randall Burdette said, \u201cAirports are not only\nimportant economic engines for their communities, but they also provide\ntremendous quality of life benefits for everyone in those communities.&nbsp; The aviation industry in Virginia employs\nmore than 146,600 people and generates more than $25 billion in economic\nactivity annually.&nbsp; Studies show that\nAdvanced Air Mobility will add thousands of new high-paying jobs and another\n$16 billion to the Virginia economy.&nbsp;\nInvesting in critical infrastructure to support AAM at our 65 public-use\nairports will provide tremendous dividends and change the way Virginians move\nfrom point A to point B.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To prepare the 65 public-use airports in Virginia for the arrival of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) vehicles, the Virginia Aviation Board (VAB) and the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) are making funding available to support bringing 3-phase electrical power and broadband connectivity to these airports.
