EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024\nis July 22-28 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBurt is best known to the public for his historic designs\nof SpaceShipOne, Voyager, and Global Flyer, but for EAA members and aviation\naficionados, his unique concepts began more than a half-century ago with\nfiberglass canard aircraft that revolutionized the amateur-built airplane\ncommunity,\u201d said Rick Larsen, EAA\u2019s vice president of communities and member\nprograms, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. \u201cEvery time Burt\njoins us at Oshkosh, his presentations draw big audiences that are eager to\nhear his unique perspectives on flight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burt-Rutan.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28040\" width=\"253\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burt-Rutan.jpg 330w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burt-Rutan-300x273.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><figcaption><em>Burt Rutan<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutan, an EAA Lifetime member for more than 50 years, made\nhis first big splash at Oshkosh in 1972 with the VariViggen, which brought\ncanard design to the homebuilt community. That led to a series of other Rutan\nrecreational aircraft designs with innovative moldless fiberglass construction,\nwhich included the VariEze and Long-EZ that are still being built today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The public recognition of Rutan came in the 1980s with his\ndesign of Voyager, which in December 1986 became the first aircraft to fly\naround the world non-stop on a single tank of fuel. The record was surpassed\nwith a similar solo flight by Rutan\u2019s Global Flyer in 2005, with Rutan\u2019s\nunsurpassed legacy crowned with the successful flight SpaceShipOne in 2004,\ncompleting the first successful civilian space flight that earned the $10\nmillion X Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the way, Rutan\u2019s imaginative deigns also included the\none-of-a-kind Proteus, an \u201caffordable U-2 aircraft,\u201d and the asymmetrical\ntwin-engine Boomerang, among others, coming from Rutan\u2019s SCALED Composites in\nMojave, California, often regarded as the most aggressive aerospace research\ncompany in the world. Through the years, that company developed and tested a\nvariety of groundbreaking projects, from military aircraft to executive jets,\nshowcasing some of the most innovative and energy-efficient designs ever flown.\nRutan has received the Presidential Citizen\u2019s Medal, the Charles A. Lindbergh\nAward, two Collier Trophies, the EAA Freedom of Flight Award \u2013 the\norganization\u2019s highest honor \u2013 and has been included in TIME Magazine\u2019s \u201c100\nmost influential people in the world\u201d listing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rutan\u2019s exact schedule at AirVenture will be announced as it\nis finalized.
