{"id":28023,"date":"2024-03-04T19:55:05","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=28023"},"modified":"2024-03-04T19:55:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:55:08","slug":"banner-year-for-aopa-foundation-you-can-fly-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/maryland\/banner-year-for-aopa-foundation-you-can-fly-challenge\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Banner Year for AOPA Foundation You Can Fly Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Helping to ensure a bright future for general aviation\nthrough important initiatives that grow the pilot population and help keep it\nsafe, AOPA members and the GA community once again came through in droves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the You Can Fly Challenge window of June 1 and\nDecember 31, 2023, more than 2,900 donors gave more than $3.5 million to the\nAOPA Foundation, unlocking the Ray Foundation\u2019s generous $2.5 million\ndollar-for-dollar match. In all, the You Can Fly Challenge raised more than\n$6.2 million to fund essential AOPA aviation programs that promote and protect\nGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe generosity of our donors and their shared commitment to\ngeneral aviation is something we never take for granted, and we are grateful\nfor their support,\u201d said AOPA Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Tennyson. \u201cIt\nis only because of donors to the AOPA Foundation that we can offer You Can Fly\nprograms that get people flying and keep them flying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/news-and-media\/all-news\/2017\/april\/04\/philanthropist-james-c-ray-lived-life-fearlessly\">James C. Ray<\/a> was a World War II veteran and a member of the AOPA Foundation New Horizon Society who believed \u201clife skills are learned through aviation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AOPA Foundation\u2019s You Can Fly program comprises four\nimportant initiatives: High School Aviation STEM Curriculum, Flight Training,\nFlying Clubs, and Rusty Pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 23,000 students in 47 states and Washington, D.C.,\nare currently discovering aviation through the High School Aviation STEM\nCurriculum. To date, more than 71,000 students have earned high school credit\nthrough these courses. More than 60 percent of initiative graduates have\nindicated they are pursuing an aviation career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AOPA\u2019s Flight Training Advantage (AFTA) program is making\nflight training more efficient and transparent with detailed progress\nreporting, cockpit scoring, and individualized lessons tailored to each\nstudent\u2019s strengths. To date, more than 2,110 flight schools and independent\ncertified flight instructors have signed on, with more than 14,000 training\nhours logged on AFTA since March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AOPA Foundation Flying Clubs team has helped launch 241\nclubs nationwide, giving thousands of pilots affordable access to aircraft and\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 13,000 formerly lapsed pilots are back in the flight\ndeck thanks to the help of AOPA\u2019s Rusty Pilots program, designed to make it\neasy to get back in the air, even after decades away. Since the Rusty Pilots\nprogram began 10 years ago, nearly 51,000 pilots have attended more than 1,000\nin-person and online seminars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the 2023 You Can Fly Challenge is behind us, the need for support continues.
