{"id":27869,"date":"2024-02-17T00:01:11","date_gmt":"2024-02-17T00:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=27869"},"modified":"2024-02-17T00:01:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-17T00:01:13","slug":"massdot-aeronautics-applies-for-1-million-federal-highway-administration-aid-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/massachusetts\/massdot-aeronautics-applies-for-1-million-federal-highway-administration-aid-grant\/%20","title":{"rendered":"MassDOT Aeronautics Applies for $1 Million Federal Highway Administration AID Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/orgs\/aeronautics-division\">Aeronautics Division<\/a> of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has applied for $1 million in funding from the Federal Highway Administration\u2019s \u201cAccelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration\u201d Program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and authorized to accelerate innovation in highway transportation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal represents the second stage of a three-phase\nproject, using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (\u201cUAS,\u201d also known as drones,) to\ncreate a \u201cdigital software systems infrastructure.\u201d The system converts UAS\nremotely sensed data into actionable information designed to help optimize the\nmanagement processes and operations of MassDOT\u2019s Highway Division.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding for this stage would complement the project\u2019s\ninitial phase, for which MassDOT Aeronautics received $1 million from the AID\nprogram in 2021. MassDOT matched the initial AID grant funding with additional\nfunding of $250,000, the same proposed match for the current proposal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe AID grant application represents a unique opportunity\nto improve the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the state\u2019s\ntransportation system while providing a transformative national model for\npublic transportation management,\u201d said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica\nTibbits-Nutt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy using drones to collect and analyze data on highway\ninfrastructure, this second phase of our project represents a significant step\ntoward leveraging new technology to help MassDOT Highway improve management\nprocesses, strategic planning, and operations,\u201d said MassDOT Aeronautics\nAdministrator Jeff DeCarlo.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UAS-based digital infrastructure is designed to\nintegrate with MassDOT Highway projects across Massachusetts, ranging from\nrural to urban locations, supporting a range of projects, including advanced\nbridge inspection, asset mapping, construction monitoring, and highway corridor\nasset detection\/inspection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Highway Division looks forward to an active partnership\nas this invaluable MassDOT Aeronautics\u2019 project works to make surface\ntransportation safer, more responsive to public needs and more adaptable to new\ntechnologies,\u201d said MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AID grant request is part of the Healey-Driscoll\nAdministration\u2019s whole of government strategy to compete for federal dollars\nwith recent successes, including a $372 million award towards rebuild the Cape\nCod Bridges and $108 million for West-East rail improvements, as well as more\nthan $1.9 billion in still pending federal funding applications to advance\nprojects that further equity, mobility, competitiveness, workforce development\nand climate resiliency in communities across Massachusetts.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe AID application leverages Massachusetts\u2019 strength as a\nhub for innovation to improve the safety of our transportation,\u201d said Director\nof Federal Funds and Infrastructure Quentin Palfrey. \u201cWe look forward to\nworking with our federal partners as part of our whole-of-government approach\nto compete for the historic federal investments made by the Biden\nadministration in the future of transportation, energy, technology, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Aeronautics Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has applied for $1 million in funding from the Federal Highway Administration\u2019s \u201cAccelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) Demonstration\u201d Program, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and authorized to accelerate innovation in highway transportation.
