Department of Transportation has\nreceived a first-of-its kind waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration to\nremotely launch and fly drones beyond the pilot\u2019s visual line of sight for\nconstruction project inspections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once NCDOT completes safety testing, it plans to place\ndrones in docking stations at projects sites across the state and use the\ndrones to remotely monitor and provide progress reports on transportation\nconstruction projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rebecca-Gallas-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rebecca-Gallas-1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rebecca-Gallas-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Rebecca-Gallas-1-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption><em>Rebecca Gallas<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis FAA waiver allows us to monitor project sites from\nanywhere, anytime, without the need for drone pilots to drive to sites and set\nup drone systems to capture and stream images,\u201d said Becca Gallas, director of\nthe NCDOT\u2019s Division of Aviation, which manages the agency\u2019s use of drones.\n\u201cThat will save time and money and increase the safety of our employees by\nremoving the risk associated with this fieldwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest FAA waiver follows a 2020 waiver that allowed NCDOT to become the nation\u2019s first state transportation agency to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdot.gov\/news\/press-releases\/Pages\/2020\/2020-10-05-drone-bridge-inspection-waiver.aspx\">inspect bridges<\/a> using drones beyond the visual line of sight of the pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NCDOT Division of Aviation is piloting the use of docked drones with the private firm Skydio, one of 18 partners in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdot.gov\/divisions\/aviation\/uas\/Pages\/beyond.aspx\">BEYOND<\/a> program. NCDOT is one of eight U.S. teams testing and demonstrating how drones can be safely used for business and government purposes to inform the Federal Aviation Administration\u2019s regulation of these rapidly advancing technologies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By harnessing the power of remote drone operations, the\nDivision of Aviation remains steadfast in its mission to provide\ncost-effective, safe and cutting-edge solutions for North Carolina&#8217;s\ntransportation and infrastructure needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a new tool for our toolkit,&#8221; Gallas said.\n&#8220;Our pilot program will serve as an example of the transformative\npotential of remote drone operations, ensuring the continued advancement of our\nstate&#8217;s infrastructure projects.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina transportation engineers will soon be able to inspect and monitor construction sites more safely and efficiently using docked drones flown by pilots not located at the construction site.
