(Bill) Powley, USAF (Ret.), as the 2023 inductee\ninto the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame. Powley joins an elite group of\nindividuals who have been recognized for their significant contributions to\nflight instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-Powley.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26132\" width=\"164\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-Powley.png 693w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-Powley-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><figcaption><em>Lt. Col. Herbert W. (Bill) Powley, USAF (Ret.) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are honored to induct Lt. Col Powley into the\nFlight Instructor Hall of Fame,&#8221; said NAFI Chairperson, Karen Kalishek.\n&#8220;His lifelong dedication to flight instruction and aviation safety has\ntouched thousands of lives and serves as an inspiration to flight instructors\neverywhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The induction ceremony will be held during the NAFI\nmembership breakfast at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at\n8:00 am. NAFI sponsors and administrators of the Flight Instructor Hall of\nFame, but does not participate in the judging, which is done by a selection\ncommittee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powley graduated from the Air Force Academy and served more\nthan 23 years as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, and test pilot, including\ntwo tours in Vietnam flying 347 missions in the F-4 and A-7. After his\nretirement from the Air Force in 1991, Powley continued to share his passion\nfor aviation by volunteering his time to train pilots. He founded FLIGHT Foundation\n(Flight Lesson Instructional Grants Helping Teens) and has personally raised\nover $1.9 million. He has flown almost 12,000 students on more than 4,000\ndiscovery flights, most of which were free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powley has been an active member and leader in many aviation\norganizations, including the Soaring Society of America, and the Experimental\nAircraft Association and NAFI.&nbsp; In 2010\nhe received the A Scott Crossfield Aerospace Science Teacher of the Year Award\nfor the from the National Aviation Hall of Fame. The Tennessee Aviation Hall of\nFame (TAHOF) created a special award to recognize him that same year (Tennessee\nAviation Person of the Year). In 2011 he received Tennessee&#8217;s highest aviation\nrecognition -the Career Contributions to Aviation Award and, in 2013, was\ninducted into the Tennessee Aviation Hall-of-Fame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) has recognized Lt.
