This project highlights our\ncontinued efforts to bring in more federal dollars to upgrade our airports\nacross the state to address our needs for the future now,\u201d said Hawaii\nDepartment of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen. \u201cWe are committed to an\nairport system that prioritizes a safe and enjoyable curb-to-plane experience\nand will continue to work with our partners to deliver efficiently while\nminimizing costs to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/OGG-South-TSA-Checkpoint-Exterior-Perspective-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26125\"\/><figcaption><em>Location of work to be done.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The project at OGG, the second busiest airport in the state,\nwill increase the TSA screening capacity to as many as six additional lanes.\nThe north checkpoint and all its lanes will remain operational, and as part of\nthe multimillion-dollar project, that checkpoint will be upgraded by enclosing\nit and adding air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful for the investment our federal and state\npartners are making in TSA security screening operations at Kahului Airport.\nTravelers will notice the improvements when departing the airport and TSA\nemployees will ultimately enjoy a more comfortable environment when working in\nthe new space,\u201d said TSA Federal Security Director for Hawai\u2018i and the Pacific,\nNanea Vasta. \u201cDuring the construction phases of this project, we remain\ncommitted to providing the most effective and efficient security operation\nwhile reflecting the aloha spirit of the islands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past year, HDOT worked closely with the TSA to bring\nin canine units to try and help with long security lines at OGG. Large tents\nwere also put up as protection from the elements while passengers waited to be\nscreened, and now those tents are used as shelter for anyone being picked up\ncurbside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new south checkpoint waiting lobby, screening lanes, and\nTSA support spaces will be located on the second floor. Other airport support\nspaces and tenant retail opportunities will be on the ground floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pedestrian bridge will connect the new south checkpoint at\nOGG to a passenger hold room and will span over an existing service road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new OGG project will pursue LEED Silver Certification\nfor the building, looking to maximize energy-saving measures, like more\nefficient LED lighting and photovoltaic opportunities to offset energy\nconsumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the ongoing airport modernization plan, HDOT\nrecently upgraded the baggage handling system in Lobby 2 at the Daniel K.\nInouye International Airport, expanding the capacity to security-screen bags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OGG project will cost $62.3 million.
