{"id":26040,"date":"2023-07-03T13:25:04","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T13:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=26040"},"modified":"2023-07-03T13:25:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T13:25:05","slug":"long-beach-airport-kicks-off-new-aviation-program-for-high-school-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/california\/long-beach-airport-kicks-off-new-aviation-program-for-high-school-students\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Airport Kicks Off New Aviation Program for High School Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/lgb\/\">Long Beach Airport<\/a> (LGB) kicked off its first Careers Taking Flight Externship Program last week, with 13 students from Cabrillo and Jordan high schools learning about a wide variety of aviation careers and how to make themselves competitive for future positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Long Beach&#8217;s deep-rooted connection to the aviation\nsector, which contributes to our local economy, has always been a source of\npride for our city,&#8221; said Mayor Rex Richardson. &#8220;Today, I am happy to\nannounce the launch of Long Beach Airport&#8217;s innovative summer externship\nprogram, creating remarkable opportunities for our future leaders.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Long-Beach-airport-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26042\" width=\"339\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Long-Beach-airport-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Long-Beach-airport-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In partnership with the Long Beach Unified School District,\nstudents were selected through a competitive process\u2014from a pool of more than\n60 applicants\u2014to take part in the uplifting opportunity.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLong Beach Airport has created a unique, hands-on, paid\nsummer externship program that provides LBUSD students the opportunity to\nexplore an array of careers in aviation,\u201d said Michelle Thomassian,\nAdministrator, Business Engagements and Strategic Partnerships for the Long\nBeach Unified School District. \u201cWe are beyond grateful to the Airport for\ntaking such a collaborative and student-centered approach to workforce\ndevelopment. The LBUSD business partner community is instrumental in empowering\nand preparing our brilliant students to get their dreams off the ground.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of the 40-hour, five-day program, students\nlearned about the job duties, pay and credentials required for more than a\ndozen careers working for airports, airlines, the Transportation Security\nAdministration (TSA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the\nbusiness aviation sector.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who successfully completed the full course received\na $500 incentive payment. Participants also were offered a free exploration\nflight on the final day of the program through Chapter Seven of the\nExperimental Aircraft Association\u2019s Young Eagles program. Since its inception\nin 1992, the Young Eagles program has given more than two million young people\nages 8 to 17 the opportunity to fly in a general aviation airplane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer externship was the start of a newly established\nLong Beach Airport Careers Taking Flight program, a suite of programming\ndesigned to provide students from grade school to college with different\nopportunities to gain a basic understanding of career opportunities within the\naviation world as well as general knowledge about LGB and its industry partners.\nBeyond the externship program, future programs will include a paid summer\ninternship for high school students, anticipated to launch for summer 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partners who provided tours or guest speakers for the high\nschool students included Aeroplex Group Partners, Atlantic Aviation, the\nFederal Aviation Administration, FlightSafety International, SoCal Jet\nServices, Southwest Airlines, Swinerton Builders and the Transportation\nSecurity Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program will lead to bright opportunities and rewarding\ncareers for these students, and we thank our partners for their participation\nand engagement in helping us inspire tomorrow&#8217;s aviation professionals,\u201d said\nLong Beach Airport Director Cynthia Guidry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Careers Taking Flight program aligns with goals outlined\nin the Long Beach\u2019s Racial Equity and Reconciliation Initiative to eliminate\nsocial and economic disparities in communities most impacted by racism. The\nprogram also supports goals of the City\u2019s Strategic Plan for Youth and Emerging\nAdults, which centers around academic and job training needs of youth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LGB encompasses 1,166 acres and has three runways.
