{"id":25924,"date":"2023-06-21T22:43:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T22:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=25924"},"modified":"2023-06-21T22:43:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T22:43:37","slug":"clt-breaks-ground-on-fourth-parallel-runway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/north-carolina\/clt-breaks-ground-on-fourth-parallel-runway\/%20","title":{"rendered":"CLT Breaks Ground on Fourth Parallel Runway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Charlotte Douglas International Airport began the next project\nunder the Destination CLT portfolio today with the groundbreaking of CLT\u2019s\nfourth parallel runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was identified in the Airport\u2019s 2016 Master Plan Update\nto address capacity, meeting future demand while enhancing operational\nefficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a special day for the City of Charlotte as we break\nground on a new runway at our growing Airport,\u201d Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said.\n\u201cAs one of the busiest airports in the world, CLT is a top economic driver for\nthe State of North Carolina and this new runway will increase our operational\nproductivity enabling additional flights while reducing our carbon footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLT\u2019s $1.006 billion airfield project will boost operations\nwith the addition of the 10,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway, which will\nbe located west of Runway 18C\/36C and serve departing traffic. It will include\nnorth and south end-around taxiways, which will give aircraft arriving on the\nexisting western parallel runway the capability for continued movement around\nthe new runway and the existing center runway, reducing aircraft operating\ntime, fuel burn and emissions while eliminating long wait times for passengers\u2019\naircraft to get to their gates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe construction of a fourth parallel runaway at Charlotte\nDouglas will be vital to promote continued growth in the Charlotte region and\nis a huge win for the state,\u201d said North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. \u201cI was\nproud to advocate for funding this project, and this is exactly why I helped\nnegotiate and pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that has already brought\nmore than $75 million to Charlotte Douglas. I want to thank Mayor Lyles and our\npartners in the region for working together on behalf of the people of\nCharlotte.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmerican Airlines is proud to continue investing in\nCharlotte through the airport\u2019s Destination CLT program,\u201d said American\u2019s Chief\nOperating Officer David Seymour. \u201cThis new runway will lead to an increase in\ncapacity to meet future demand. Growth in Charlotte is good for everyone who\nrelies on this airport including American, the customers we serve and our team\nmembers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South End-Around Taxiway project will require a one-mile relocation of West Boulevard between Piney Top Road and Byrum Drive. The North End-Around Taxiway necessitates the relocation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cltairport.com\/community\/airport-overlook\/\">Airport Overlook<\/a>, a one-mile segment of Old Dowd Road and the construction of a new private access drive adjacent to the Airport\u2019s Long Term 1 parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2015, Charlotte Douglas has been hard at work\ndeveloping several Destination CLT projects, the Airport\u2019s $3.1 billion capital\ninvestment in capacity enhancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finished projects include Concourse A Expansion Phase I,\nseveral concourse renovations, The Plaza and the Airport\u2019s upper and\nlower-level roadways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The signature Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) continues\nconstruction and is more than halfway complete. The east side of the new\nbuilding is on target to debut this fall. It will include the unveiling of the\nQueen Charlotte statue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the 146,000-square-foot TLE roadway canopy under\nconstruction will cover the eight lanes in front of the terminal. A late 2024\nfinish date is scheduled for the canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 191,848-square-foot, 10-gate Concourse A Expansion Phase\nII will debut in fall 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLT ranks the seventh busiest airport worldwide for arrivals\nand departures and 10th in North America for passengers according to the\nAirports Council International (ACI) 2022 preliminary rankings. Globally, CLT\u2019s\npassenger traffic ranks 19th. The final rankings will be made public later this\nsummer or early fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlotte Douglas handled 505,589 arrivals and departures in\n2022 and served nearly 48 million passengers, which is a 10% jump from 43\nmillion passengers in 2021 and only 5% below the record-breaking 50 million\npassengers in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Charlotte Douglas International Airport began the next project under the Destination CLT portfolio today with the groundbreaking of CLT\u2019s fourth parallel runway.
