Salem\u2019s project \u201cSoar with Salem: A Comprehensive Program to Inspire Women and Girls to Become the Next Generation of STEM Professionals\u201d will offer a three-year program to high school and college students providing support and resources to increase their likelihood of pursuing studies and a career in STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/SalemAcademyandCollege-edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25921\" width=\"260\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/SalemAcademyandCollege-edit.jpg 707w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/SalemAcademyandCollege-edit-238x300.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Research and experience affirm that the women who pursue and\nobtain college degrees in a STEM field demonstrate three key assets:\nresilience; engagement with science; and academic preparation in math, writing,\nand the sciences. Salem\u2019s program will focus on cultivating all of these\naspects of STEM preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salem Academy is the nation\u2019s only all-girls, boarding and\nday high school located on a college campus with a STEAM focus. Salem College\nprovides a liberal arts education with a distinctive focus on health across its\ncurriculum and co-curriculum, preparing students for a range of career paths\nand graduate programs. NASA affirmed Salem Academy and College\u2019s expertise in\nSTEAM education and health leadership, and in developing these assets in their\nstudents. This is Salem Academy and College\u2019s first grant ever from NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSalem Academy and College is proud to receive a grant from\nNASA to focus on reducing the gender gap in STEM,\u201d Salem Academy and College\nPresident Summer J. McGee, Ph.D., CPH said. \u201cAs the nation\u2019s oldest educational\ninstitution for girls and women, Salem has been for over 250 years and\ncontinues to be today a leader at the forefront of women\u2019s education. It is\nfitting that Salem was chosen to be one of the pioneers to create opportunities\nfor women to lead and blaze new trails all the way into space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are honored to be chosen among our elite sister\ninstitutions to continue the vital mission of promoting women\u2019s leadership in\nthe sciences,\u201d McGee added. \u201cWe will do our part to help propel women into the\nfuture, including NASA\u2019s plans for an all-female crew to the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award from NASA is a three-year grant for Soar with\nSalem to strengthen interest in health and STEAM by using Salem Academy and\nCollege students as mentors, bringing high school students to campus during the\nsummer to focus on science, arts, math, and academic support.&nbsp; Under the initiative, a key outcome of Soar\nwith Salem will be to encourage prospective students to study STEM disciplines\nin college with Salem College as their possible school of choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Soar with Salem initiative will result in continued\ncollaboration between Salem Academy and Salem College to identify, support,\neducate, and graduate a strong cohort of young women well prepared to succeed\nin STEM careers. In addition, Salem will expand an existing affiliation with\nnearby North Forsyth High School, which has a focus on health and STEM\u2014similar\nto that of Salem.&nbsp; Soar with Salem also\nwill foster a partnership with the United Way of Forsyth County. The co-principal\ninvestigators are Dr. Rebecca Dunn, Salem College Professor of Biology and\nDirector of the Women in Science and Mathematics Program, and Kris Porazzi\nSorrells, Salem Academy Head of School and instructor of Mathematics and\nRobotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an initiative of the Biden\/Harris administration, NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/stem\/murep\/home\/index.html\">Minority University Research and Education Project<\/a> (MUREP) created this funding opportunity for Women\u2019s Colleges and Universities to help women overcome obstacles and barriers to working in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Through the award review and awarding process, NASA recognized that the STEM pipeline for women is weak on a national basis and reached out to women\u2019s schools to build that pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MUREP is administered by NASA\u2019s Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM), which creates opportunities for students to contribute to the agency\u2019s work and grow their confidence in STEM.
