Additionally, each month\u2019s passenger numbers for January, February and March were the highest in history, showing a strengthening of air service and utilization in the winter months at AVL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"637\" height=\"225\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/American-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/American-1-1.jpg 637w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/American-1-1-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Airlines continue to invest in the western North Carolina\nregion and have grown their capacity (seats for sale in the market) in winter\nmonths. And passengers are using the additional air service, showing strong\ndemand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cApproximately 60% of AVL passengers during first quarter\n2023 were visitors to the region, a strong indicator of the strength of\ndestination appeal even in what have been traditionally slower winter months,\u201d\nsaid Lew Bleiweis, A.A.E., President and CEO. \u201cAnd I believe that this growth\ntrend is in part due to the excellent work by Explore Asheville in telling our\nregion\u2019s \u2018destination\u2019 story.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing number of passengers year-round are contributing\nto the airport\u2019s need for a larger terminal and additional parking options. The\nairport is currently constructing a new parking lot south of the terminal with\n650 spaces, and the new airport terminal groundbreaking is slated for August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month, the airport opened a new temporary boarding area\nin preparation for the major terminal construction project that will more than\ndouble the size of the airport. The new boarding area is a modular building\nadjacent to the terminal and will be used for approximately two years while new\nexpanded gate areas are constructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a pivotal time for our region in terms of air service\ngrowth and building for our future,\u201d said Bleiweis. \u201cWe are embarking on an\nexciting journey to create the airport of our region\u2019s future, and we couldn\u2019t\ndo it without the support of our community and our travelers. We are grateful\nfor our region\u2019s confidence in their local airport and promise that the next\nfew years of construction will be an adventure worth taking together.
