Several SIU aviation program officials, including director Jos\u00e9 R. Ruiz and chief flight instructor Steven Goetz, along with several flight instructors, will be on-hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am very excited at the prospect of acquiring seven new\nflight training aircraft because of the impact the new additions will have on\nour ability to serve our students,\u201d Ruiz said. \u201cOur students deserve the finest\nflight training available, and these new aircraft will assist us in meeting\nthat expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plans are for 11 aviation personnel to fly to Independence,\nKansas, to get the planes and return to Southern Illinois Airport about 7 p.m.\nWednesday, May 3, weather permitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aircraft are financed entirely by student <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.siu.edu\/aviation-and-automotive\/aviation-flight\/\">aviation flight fees<\/a>, the same funds that are used to pay for maintenance upgrades and fuel. There were more than 350 students in the aviation flight program in fall 2022, and Goetz expects that number or more in fall 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goetz said the newest planes are vital to SIU\u2019s aviation\nprogram. The new planes, which will feature cutting-edge glass panel Garmin\navionics, will increase to 47 the number of available planes for flight\ntraining students to use. The program still uses some planes that date back to\nthe late 1970s, but Goetz explained that constant upgrades allow those planes\nto continue air worthiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe use every bit of life out of them in order to make sure\nthat we are being good stewards of our students\u2019 money,\u201d he said. \u201cAs the\naviation industry grows, we have more and more demand for pilots and for flight\ntraining.
