The annual contest is part of a\nlarger national and international effort to inspire youth to illustrate the\nimportance of aviation and aerospace through art. Contest submissions were\ngrouped into three separate age categories for judging, allowing students\nranging from 6 \u2013 17 years old to compete. The contest theme was \u201cAir Sports\n&amp; The Environment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-state-art-contest-winners.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25445\" width=\"382\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-state-art-contest-winners.jpg 538w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/23-state-art-contest-winners-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><figcaption><em>The student winners of the 2023 Aviation and Aerospace Art Contest conducted by the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission were recognized during a ceremony hosted in the observation area of Will Rogers World Airport. Students, parents, and teachers that attended the ceremony were then given a tour of the airport. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony was opened by Jeff Mulder, the Director of\nAirports for the City of Oklahoma City. He welcomed the students to the Will\nRogers World Airport and encouraged the students, parents, and teachers\nattending the ceremony to explore the airport during their visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State Director of Aeronautics, Grayson Ardies,\nofficiated the ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis contest is a conduit for students to explore aerospace\nand aeronautics,\u201d Ardies said. \u201cWe are starting to see some positive outcomes\nfrom the recent upturn in aviation education is now spreading through Oklahoma\nschools. Oklahoma is ranked #1 in the nation for the number of schools teaching\nthe AOPA \u201cYou Can Fly\u201d high school curriculum. We are now seeing these school\ndistricts implement the study of flight as early as kindergarten. We hope\neducators will use this contest at the earliest ages to start conversations\nabout aviation careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Junior Division, ages 6 to 9, <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Junior_First%20Place_Anvika_Menon_.pdf\">Anvika Menon<\/a>, from Washington Irving Elementary in Edmond, took home first prize. This year\u2019s second-place winner in the Junior Division was <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Junior_Second%20Place_Jessie%20Zhu.pdf\">Jessie Zhu<\/a> from Truman Elementary in Norman. The third-place winner was <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Junior_Third%20Place_Ryann%20Smith%20Smaller.pdf\">Ryann Smith<\/a> from Stafford Elementary in Weatherford, and Honorable Mention went to <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Junior_Honorable%20Mention_Jake%20Park.pdf\">Jake Park<\/a> from Roosevelt Elementary in Norman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Intermediate_First%20Place_Chloe%20Childs.pdf\">Chloe Childs<\/a> from the Academy of Classical Christian Studies in Oklahoma City took top honors in the Intermediate Division, ages 10-13. Taking second was <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Intermediate_Second%20Place_Grace%20Huang.pdf\">Grace Huang<\/a> from Truman Elementary in Norman, and third was K. <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Intermediate_Third%20Place_Samvruth%20Sreevaisava.pdf\">Samvruth Sreevatsava<\/a> from Dove Schools of Discovery in Tulsa. Receiving an Honorable Mention in the division was <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Intermediate_Honorable%20Mention_Caden%20Day.pdf\">Caden Day<\/a> from Stafford Elementary in Weatherford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Senior_Third-Place_Carlos-Becerra-1024x729.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25447\" width=\"301\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Senior_Third-Place_Carlos-Becerra-1024x729.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Senior_Third-Place_Carlos-Becerra.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><figcaption><em>Carlos Becerra from Dove Science Academy in Oklahoma City took third place. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Norman North High student, <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Senior_First%20Place_Elizabeth%20Yue..pdf\">Elizabeth Yue<\/a>, finished atop the Senior Division, ages 14-17, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Senior_Second%20Place_Jaylee%20Edwards.pdf\">Jaylee Edwards<\/a>, a student at Chisholm High in Goltry. <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Senior_Third%20Place_Carlos%20Becerra.pdf\">Carlos Becerra<\/a> from Dove Science Academy in Oklahoma City took third, while <a href=\"https:\/\/oac.ok.gov\/sites\/g\/files\/gmc221\/f\/Senior_Honorable%20Mention_Briana%20Macias.pdf\">Briana Macias<\/a> received an honorable mention in the division. Macias is a student at Yukon Middle School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allyson Carson, with the Oklahoma Defense Industry\nAssociation, served as the lead contest judge and gave an overview of the\njudging process. \u201cThe judging was conducted by representatives from Oklahoma\u2019s\naviation, aerospace, and defense industry and included: Commander Steve\n\u201cSlater\u201d Duran, VQ-7 Commanding Officer, Tinker Air Force Base; Maurice\nCompton, Chief Executive Officer at Ready 3; Col. Jason Davis, 185th Special\nOperations Squadron commander, and myself,\u201d said Carson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-place winners in each of the three age categories\nreceive $200, while the second-place winners receive $150. A cash prize of $100\nis presented to students who place third, and honorable mention will receive\n$50. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top three entries in each age division were forwarded to\nWashington, D.C., where they competed nationally against other winners from the\nU.S. for the right to advance to the international competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The national winners were announced in March and have been\nsubmitted for the 2023 International Aviation Art Contest, which will be judged\nin June by the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration A\u00e9ronautique Internationale.
