{"id":25023,"date":"2023-03-06T17:15:47","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T17:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=25023"},"modified":"2023-03-06T17:15:50","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T17:15:50","slug":"vintage-fg-1d-corsair-gets-new-paint-courtesy-of-delta-air-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/state-news\/georgia\/vintage-fg-1d-corsair-gets-new-paint-courtesy-of-delta-air-lines\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Vintage FG-1D Corsair Gets New Paint Courtesy of Delta Air Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A World War II-era Corsair fighter based at Commemorative\nAir Force&nbsp; (CAF) Airbase Georgia in\nPeachtree City has a new coat of navy-blue paint, courtesy of PPG and employee\nvolunteers at the Delta Air Lines Technical Operations Center in Atlanta.\nRecently featured in the movie, \u201cDevotion,\u201d the FG-1D Corsair was carefully\nstripped to bare metal and repainted to return it to like-new condition. The\npaint design represents VMF-312, a Marine Corps squadron known as the &#8220;Checkerboards&#8221;\nthat flew Corsairs in WWII and Korea. The unit flies F\/A-18 Hornets today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely grateful to the employees and volunteers\nat Delta Air Lines for restoring this Corsair to its original appearance,\u201d said\nAirbase Leader Joel Perkins. \u201cThis will delight the public and aviation fans\nwho come to see the Corsair at airshows, aviation events and our Warbird\nMuseum. It never saw military combat but\nwas used stateside in various roles until the U.S. Navy struck it from active\nduty in 1956. It was privately owned for a few years until it was sold in 1960\nto CAF Hall of Fame member Marvin L. \u201cLefty\u201d Gardner. The Corsair was last\npainted in 2001 at the Vought Industries Dallas facility, where it received the\nnumber 530 from VMF-312, representing 1st Lt. MO Chance. CAF Airbase Georgia\nhas been home for the FG-1D \u201c530\u201d since August 2012. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chance Vought manufactured 12,571 F4U Corsairs in the\nlongest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942\u201353).\nThe Corsair served in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, Fleet Air Arm and the Royal\nNew Zealand Air Force, as well as the French Navy A\u00e9ronavale and other smaller\nair forces, until the 1960s. It quickly became the most capable carrier-based\nfighter-bomber of World War II. Some Japanese pilots regarded it as the most\nformidable American fighter of the war, and the U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill\nratio with the F4U Corsair.
