{"id":24925,"date":"2023-02-28T02:43:25","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T02:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saj.pachecostudios.com?p=24925"},"modified":"2023-02-28T02:43:27","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T02:43:27","slug":"nearly-1b-in-bipartisan-infrastructure-law-airport-funding-awarded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateaviationjournal.com\/index.php\/national-news\/nearly-1b-in-bipartisan-infrastructure-law-airport-funding-awarded\/%20","title":{"rendered":"Nearly $1B in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Funding Awarded"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With air traffic poised to reach or beat pre-pandemic levels\nthis year, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is awarding nearly $1\nbillion from President Biden\u2019s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to 99 airports of\nall shapes and sizes across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding helps meet the growing demand for air travel and\ninvests in key areas to help get travelers in and out of airports more quickly\nand improve the passenger experience by investing in new baggage systems,\nlarger security checkpoints and improved ground transportation. Other projects\nincrease terminal sustainability and improve accessibility for individuals with\ndisabilities. Several grants will address the needs of aging air traffic\ncontrol towers. The investments will go to airports in 47 states and two\nterritories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmericans deserve the best airports in the world, and with\ndemand for air travel surging back, this funding to improve the passenger\nexperience couldn\u2019t come at a more urgent time,\u201d said U.S. Transportation\nSecretary Pete Buttigieg. \u201cThese grants will make it faster and easier to check\nyour bags, get through security and find your gate, all while creating jobs and\nsupporting local economies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>View a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/bil\/airport-terminals\">data visualization<\/a> of the airports receiving funding.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s funding doesn\u2019t just improve airport terminals. It\ncreates opportunities in communities large and small for good-paying jobs and a\nchance to be part of our country\u2019s thriving aviation sector,\u201d said Deputy FAA\nAdministrator A. Bradley Mims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These awards are on top of the $1 billion for Airport\nterminals announced for 85 airports last year. The vast majority of those\nprojects are under construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants contain an element that will build new or\nexpanded terminal facilities. Among them are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$10.8 million to Des Moines International\nAirport in Des Moines, Iowa: This project replaces the 1948 terminal that is\nbeyond its useful life and operating above capacity. Recent data shows\naeronautical demand at 109 percent of pre-pandemic levels. This project offers\nopportunities to strengthen climate resilience and create good paying jobs.\nThis phase includes the preparation and construction of the terminal\nfoundation.&nbsp; <\/li><li>$29 million to Salt Lake City International\nAirport (SLC) in Salt Lake City, Utah: The New SLC is a phased Terminal and\nNorth Concourse Redevelopment Program which replaces aging and\ncapacity-constrained facilities. This award funds a portion of Phase 4 of the\nNew SLC and includes 16 new gates as well as up to five permanent hardstand\npositions in Concourse B.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants contain an element that will make passenger\ncheck-in more efficient by improving security-screening areas. Among them are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$10 million to Sarasota Bradenton International\nAirport in Sarasota, Fla.: This award funds a portion of a terminal expansion\nproject that adds new passenger security screening checkpoint lanes, five gates\nand a new energy-efficient central energy plant. This will help travelers get\nthrough security more quickly.<\/li><li>$6.5 million to Savannah\/Hilton Head\nInternational Airport in Savannah, Ga.: The security screening checkpoint\nexpansion project consists of adding 23,000 square feet to the south side of\nthe terminal building. This award funds a portion of phase 2 of the project,\nwhich includes relocating and expanding from four to six screening lanes to\nhelp reduce wait times for travelers.<\/li><li>$50 million to O\u2019Hare International Airport in\nChicago, Ill.: This award helps fund a project to rehabilitate and expand\npassenger access for the 60-year-old Terminal 3. This includes a reconfigured\nTransportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint, improvements to the\ncentral passenger corridor, new Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant\nand family restrooms, and updates to the passenger baggage system to help get\ntravelers in and out of O\u2019Hare more quickly.<\/li><li>$5 million to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in\nColumbia, S.C.: This award funds a portion of the terminal expansion project,\nadding a fourth screening lane to the passenger security-screening checkpoint\nand bringing the checkpoint up to current TSA standards.<\/li><li>$16 million to Seattle-Tacoma International\nAirport in Seattle, Wash.: This project will relocate Security Checkpoint 1\nfrom the ticketing level to the lower baggage claim level, which will provide\nadditional screening capacity and reduced wait times. The project will include\nenergy-efficient upgrades that meet or exceed all applicable ADA standards.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants contain an element that will improve passenger\nexperience, including more reliable and faster baggage systems. Among them are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$4.4 million to Ted Stevens Anchorage\nInternational Airport in Anchorage, Alaska: The project increases North\nTerminal capacity by installing common use equipment and upgrading the baggage\nhandling system.<\/li><li>$4.3 million to Lawton-Fort Sill Regional\nAirport in Lawton, Okla.: The terminal modernization and expansion project\nincludes a building expansion with a new baggage claim and meeter-greeter\nareas, a new and expanded security checkpoint and a hold room expansion that\naccommodates two airline gates. This award will provide funding to complete the\nfinal phase of the project, which includes an expanded airline counter, office\nspaces, conveyor baggage handling system for departures, a passenger boarding\nbridge and curbside area updates that will help provide a smoother experience\nfor travelers getting in and out of the airport.<\/li><li>$38 million to Baltimore\/Washington\nInternational Thurgood Marshall Airport in Baltimore, Md.: This project will\nfund a portion of the Concourse A and B expansion project to include baggage\nsystem improvements, direct airside connection between Concourses A and B,\nexpanded apron level operations space, larger hold rooms, new concession space\nand modern restrooms.<\/li><li>$5 million to Bradley International Airport in\nWinsor Locks, Conn.: This award funds a portion of a terminal expansion project\nat the airport, including a new in-line checked baggage system and control\nroom, expanded passenger hold rooms, new airline gate space and other\nmodifications for the efficient movement of passengers and baggage.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li><li>$13.3 million to Key West International Airport\nin Key West, Fla.: This award funds 20,000 square feet of renovations to the\nexisting airside terminal building to expand the baggage claim and passenger\nsecurity-screening checkpoint. It also funds a portion of a project to\nconstruct a new 48,800 square foot Concourse A immediately north of the\nexisting airside terminal building. The new concourse will include seven\npassenger-boarding bridges. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants will increase access to other modes of\ntransportation or improve roadways. Those include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$1.6 million to Cleveland Hopkins International\nAirport in Cleveland, Ohio: This award helps fund a project to rehabilitate and\nresurface approximately 2,100 feet of the public transportation tunnel membrane\nfrom downtown Cleveland to the Airport terminal building. The work includes\nrehabilitating wall surfaces, replacing the tunnel ceiling and waterproof\nmembrane in the tunnel tramway, structural repairs and installation of a new\ndrainage system. Cleveland Hopkins is also receiving a second grant of $1.6\nmillion to renovate 13 airport terminal restrooms to meet ADA requirements.<\/li><li>$8 million to Louis Armstrong New Orleans\nInternational Airport in Kenner, La.: This award helps fund the site\npreparation work and construction of a road between the north terminal and\nsouth campus parking and rental car facilities. This project will enhance\nsafety, reduce idling and carbon emissions and connect the terminal to the\nfuture transit\/passenger rail terminal to help improve access to the airport.<\/li><li>$7 million to Nashville International Airport in\nNashville, Tenn.: The Terminal Access Roadway Improvements project is\nreconfigures the airport\u2019s access roadway. The project will lengthen and widen\nthe road, enhance safety and improve wayfinding signage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>6 grants are awarded to airports to refurbish their air\ntraffic control towers. Among those are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$500,000 to Chennault International Airport in\nLake Charles, La.: This award funds the replacement of the exterior metal panel\nrain screen on the tower and will improve resiliency as well as protect the\ntower\u2019s electrical, mechanical and communication equipment.<\/li><li>$4.5 million to Rosecrans Memorial Airport in\nSt. Joseph, Mo.: This project reconstructs the existing tower to relocate it\nabove the 100-year flood stage, replace aging infrastructure, achieve\ncompliance with ADA requirements and improve energy efficiency.<\/li><li>$2 million to Albany International Airport in\nAlbany, N.Y.: This project rehabilitates the air traffic control tower. Work\nincludes upgrading and replacing existing mechanical, electrical and HVAC\nbuilding systems that have reached the end of their useful life. The project\nwill improve energy efficiency and bring the systems up to current standards.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants contain an element that will increase terminal\nsustainability. Among them are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$6 million to Portland International Airport in\nPortland, Ore.: This project will convert the heating system at the terminal\nfrom boilers fueled by fossil fuels to an electric-powered heat pump. This\nproject will significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas\nemissions and harmful pollutants, create job opportunities and strengthen\nclimate resilience for the facility.<\/li><li>$15 million to Philadelphia International\nAirport in Philadelphia, Pa.: This project funds a portion of the Terminal\nEnergy Optimization Program. This will replace and upgrade Pre-Condition Air\n(PCA) units and Ground Power Units (GPUs) at 25 gates. This equipment powers\nand cools aircraft while at the gate, avoiding the use of aircraft engines.\nPhiladelphia International Airport is also receiving a second grant of $15\nmillion to improve accessibility in the terminal. That grant will fund the\nrenovation and construction of terminal restrooms, adult assisted care,\nmother&#8217;s rooms and service animal relief areas.<\/li><li>$35 million to Dallas-Fort Worth International\nAirport (DFW) in Texas: This award funds the second phase of the installation\nof the airport\u2019s Zero Carbon Electric Central Utility Plant (eCUP), which will\nbe powered 100% by renewable energy. The eCUP will position DFW to achieve its\ntarget of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, providing the airport with\nuninterrupted, redundant service. The grant also funds a portion of the\nTerminal D Energy Efficiency Enhancement program that replaces aging\ninfrastructure with modern systems to significantly improve energy efficiency\nand reduce emissions. This project includes the replacement of the aging HVAC\nsystems, installation of dimmable smart glass in terminal windows, and\neco-friendly roof replacement.<\/li><li>$8.6 million to Syracuse Regional Airport in\nSyracuse, N.Y.: The airport has started a sustainability initiative to increase\nenergy efficiency and cut emissions in the terminal building. This project\nreplaces the terminal HVAC system, windows and siding with more energy\nefficient materials.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many grants contain an element that will go to improving\nairport access in smaller communities. Among them are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$1.7 million to Clinton Regional Airport in\nClinton, Mo.: This project reconstructs a replacement terminal building in a\nnew location, eliminating the need to cross taxiways. The project also includes\nreconstructing the airport entrance road to help residents get to the airport. <\/li><li>$950,000 to Ashley Municipal Airport in Ashley,\nN.D.: This award funds a project to construct a new 500 square foot general\naviation terminal building for passengers and flight crews. The terminal will\ninclude a waiting area, flight planning and restrooms.<\/li><li>$6 million to Rafael Hernandez Airport in\nAguadilla, P.R.: This award funds a portion of a project to rehabilitate the\nexisting 1942-era commercial terminal building, which is a modified aircraft\nhangar. It will add a second-level departure hall with four contact gates for a\nmix of narrow- and wide-body aircraft and construct a 12,000 square foot\nCustoms and Border Protection (CBP) facility to handle international arrivals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0Today\u2019s funding is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/bil\/airport-terminals\">Airport Terminal Program<\/a>, one of three aviation programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The law provides $1 billion annually for five years for Airport Terminal Program grants. In total, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided a historic $25 billion to modernize our country\u2019s airport infrastructure.
