The final rule requires certain airports to develop and implement a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/airports\/airport_safety\/safety_management_systems\/external\">safety management system<\/a> (SMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe safe operation of our nation\u2019s airports is paramount\nduring these historic times in aviation as we work to repair and construct\nnecessary airport infrastructure,\u201d said Associate Administrator for Airports\nShannetta R. Griffin, P.E. \u201cThis rule promotes safety and allows airports to\nwork collaboratively with partners to mitigate risks and avert accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of SMS programs by commercial airlines and many\nmanufacturers helped foster the safest era in commercial aviation history.\nFundamental to the program is identifying risks and then taking steps to\ncorrect potential safety issues before they result in accidents or incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final rule applies to more than 200 of America\u2019s busiest\ncommercial airports.
